consider: that one au where rin doesn't die and the universe starts breaking about it. that's not a girl who's allowed to be alive!!!!
Two days after Rinās capture, Kakashi and Rin are standing at the memorial stone. The weather is clear, bright blue sky shining up above them, peaceful clouds rolling over the green trees. It seems wrong, somehow, but the weather doesnāt change for anyone.
Rin has a bouquet in handābright orange tiger lilies and yellow daffodils.
āI thought he would like it,ā she says quietly. āThe colours, I mean.ā
Kakashi nods. His voice is shallow and toneless. āYouāre probably right.ā
Rin stoops down to place the flowers gently at the foot of the monument. She adjusts them so that none of the petals are drooping.
Kakashiās eye is burning as he stares down at the bouquet. He says nothing.
Theyāre silent for a moment before Rin stands back up, brushing off her skirt. āIf he could see us now. He wouldnāt want us to be so upset, you know.ā
āHe should be here,ā Kakashi says abruptly. āHe should beāā He lets out a little meaningless noise and nothing more.
Rin sighs sympathetically. āI know. I know. I miss him too.ā
āā¦sorry,ā he says after a moment. It comes out stiff.
Rin sighs again. āNo, itāsā itās alright.ā She fidgets with her skirt. āBut⦠how are you, Kakashi? Especially after that meeting with the Uchiha Clan. Did it go alright?ā
Kakashiās hand darts up to his headband and the eye concealed beneath it. Fabric shifts as he tucks his hands back into his pockets, almost casually, at least to the untrained eye. āThey want it back, of course. Minato-sensei is making a case for me, but theyāre unhappy.ā
Rin purses her lips. āIt shouldnāt be an argument. Obito gave it to you, it was his last will.ā
āI know.ā Kakashiās single-eyed gaze is trained on the stone. āI donāt intend to waste his gift.ā
āGood,ā Rin says firmly. āIām here for you, you know. I⦠Obito meant so much to me. To us. I want to support you with this.ā
His throat works silently as he swallows. For a second it appears as if heāll say nothing at all, but thenā āā¦You always know what to say, Rin. Thank you.ā
āWeāre teammates,ā Rin says. āThatās what we do.ā She turns slightly to give him a weak smile. āI have a shift this afternoon, but first⦠have you eaten lunch yet?ā
āā¦I havenāt yet.ā
āThen weāll eat lunch together.ā Her hand clasps firmly around his arm. āCome on.ā
Together, they walk off into the streets of Konoha, leaving the silent stone behindā
NO.

Rin watches as he kneels down to place the flowers at the foot of the monument. She joins him, adjusting it so that none of the petals are drooping.
Kakashiās eye is burning as he stares down at the bouquet. He says nothing.

Rin sighs again. āDonāt apologize. Itās not your fault.ā She fidgets with her skirt. āBut⦠how are you, Kakashi? Especially after that meeting with the Uchiha Clan. Did it go alright?ā

Rin frowns. āWeāre teammates. That's just what we do.ā She turns slightly to give him a weak smile. āI have a shift this afternoon, but first⦠have you eaten lunch yet?ā
Kakashi doesnāt answer.
āCome on, weāll eat lunch together.ā Her hand clasps firmly around his arm.

THIS IS WRONG.

Kakashi has a bouquet in handābright orange tiger lilies, purple irises and yellow daffodils.
āI thought you would like it,ā he says quietly. āThe colours.ā
Rin watches, eyes blank. āI donāt like flowers. The smell makes me feel sick.ā
He kneels down to place the flowers at the foot of the monument. When he stands back up, the bouquet sags down, leaves falling, petals are drooping.
Kakashiās eye is burning as he stares down at the bouquet. He says nothing.
Rin scoffs, skirt swaying. āIf you could see yourself. You look pathetic.ā
āYou should be here,ā Kakashi says abruptly. āYou should both beāā He ducks his head. Lets out a little meaningless noise.
āThereās no should,ā Rin says unsympathetically. āWhat happened happened and it was MY CHOICE. I died and I died and SHE DIED
āIām sorry,ā he says after a moment. He looks down at his hands, nails biting into the meat of his palms. āItās my fault.ā
āDonāt apologize,ā Rin snarls. āItās not your fault! Itās mine, do you hear me? My choice, MY CHOICE, and my fault!ā
āI had a meeting with the Uchiha Clan yesterday," Kakashi says. His hand darts up to his headband and the eye concealed beneath it. Fabric shifts as he tucks his hands back into his pockets, almost casually, at least to the untrained eye. āThey want it back, of course. Minato-sensei is making a case for me, but theyāre unhappy.ā
Rin crosses her arms. āAnd ruin my hard work? Neither of you even thanked me.ā
āI remember your last words, Obito.ā Kakashiās single-eyed gaze is trained on the stone. āI donāt intend to waste your gift.ā
āHis last words,ā Rin says coldly. āDo you remember them? Do you remember how he said nothing to me?ā
His throat works silently as he swallows. For a second it appears as if heāll say nothing at all, but thenā āThis is coming out wrong. I⦠You always knew what to say, Rin. Iām⦠I'm sorry.ā
Rin frowns. āWe were teammates. I had to. Donāt you understand? I had to, so I did, and you donāt even realize!ā
Kakashi doesnāt speak. He continues to stand there, WITH ONLY THE SILENT STONE TO KEEP HIM COMPANY.
THIS ISā
ā
Two days after Rinās death, Kakashi is standing at the memorial stone. The weather is dark, bitter currents and rolling storm clouds overhead. It seems right, somehow, that the sky is so downcast.
Kakashi has a bouquet in handābright orange tiger lilies, purple irises and yellow daffodils.
āI thought you would like it,ā he says quietly. āThe colours.ā
He kneels down to place the flowers at the foot of the monument. When he stands back up, the bouquet sags down, leaves falling, petals are drooping.
Kakashiās eye is burning as he stares down at the bouquet. He says nothing.
Minutes go by before he breaks the silence. āYou should be here,ā he says abruptly. āYou should both beāā Kakashi ducks his head. Lets out a meaningless little noise.
āIām sorry,ā he says after another moment. He looks down at his hands, nails biting into the meat of his palms. Theyāre red and splotchy, rubbed raw from scrubbing. āItās my fault. Itās all my fault.ā
He takes a deep breath. Drags his gaze away from the memorial stone. āI had a meeting with the Uchiha Clan yesterday.ā His hand darts up to his headband and the eye concealed beneath it. Fabric shifts as he tucks his hands back into his pockets, hiding the shakiness to his fingers. āThey want it back, of course. Minato-sensei is making a case for me, but theyāre unhappy.ā
āI remember your last words, Obito.ā Kakashiās single-eyed gaze returns to the stone. āI⦠I broke my promise. And Iām so sorry, Iām soāā His breathing shudders. āThe least I can do is make sure I donāt waste your gift.ā
His throat works silently as he swallows. For a second it appears as if heāll say nothing else at all, but thenā āThis is coming out wrong. I⦠Rin, you were the best of us. You always knew what to say. Iām⦠I'm sorry.ā
Kakashi doesnāt speak any longer. He continues to stand there, with only the silent stone to keep him company.
YES. THATāS IT.
ā
Two days after Rinās death, Kakashi is standing at the memorial stone. The weather is dark.
Kakashi is alone.

EHEHE I love this AU so much what an excellent idea thank you very much. By snippets, I kind of expected to just write some fun drabbles, but you know what, this deserved a slightly more fleshed out concept.
Sorry about how repetitive this is but I liked it this way lol
