Harry Sword: Monolithic Undertow: In Search of Sonic Oblivion (2021)
This book had me sold at "in search of sonic oblivion" ...
With 2021's Monolithic Undertow, British journalist Harry Sword embarked on an expansive (and mind-expanding) musical and cultural history centered on "the drone," as a continuous thread unifying countless, distinct human civilizations and traditions across millennia.
From the Bronze Age caves of Malta to the modern day raves of England's West Midlands, Sword investigates how these hypnotic frequencies have captivated humanity and influenced our search for spiritual transcendence, physical catharsis, and ritual dissolution.
Through music, of course.
Digging even deeper into the human psyche, Sword also ponders the various ways in which sound frequencies -- whether wielded by a charismatic shaman or musicians with cranked-up amplifiers -- can feel like both a comforting, womb-like embrace and as a cavernous, unsettling force of dread.
There was certainly no shortage of material for Sword to work, and he begins his journey by cataloguing ancient "archeo-acoustic" studies of Neolithic caves, Aboriginal didgeridoos, and Sufi mystics, Byzantine Gregorian chants, medieval troubadours, and Indian raga traditions before even entering the 20th Century!
Next, Sword delves into how drones colored the primal sounds of blues icons like John Lee Hooker and Mississippi Fred McDowell, avant-garde experiments of composers like La Monte Young and Tony Conrad, and pioneering free jazz of Pharaoh Sanders, John, and Alice Coltrane.
Then it's the rock 'n' roll counterculture's turn, via The Velvet Underground (naturally), space cadets Hawkwind, and Kraut-rockers like Faust and Ash Ra Tempel, followed by subsequent movements ranging from dub sound systems to punk, post-punk, and heavy metal.
I'd be lying if I didn't admit that my interest was piqued and also peaked when Sword finally got around to feedback-harnessing doom, sludge, and industrial noise-niks like Black Sabbath, Sonic Youth, Swans, Earth, Electric Wizard, the Melvins, and Sunn O))), but then you probably expected that.
If anything, Sword's exhaustive research unearths almost too much music and history for one to process (he's like Arch-Drude Julian Cope on steroids), so you better have a healthy appetite and boundless curiosity for both -- but who am I to argue with historical evidence?
In the end, this is a fascinating undertaking suggesting that the drone may be the ultimate folk music, while theorizing that humanity's eternal relationship with music could extend beyond art to something far more fundamental, elemental, inextricably fused with our very nature.

Di figurine me ne mancano una decina, ma non posso più inviare la richiesta e i soldi nella letterina alla Panini perché me le spediscano. Mamma vergava con infinita cura quei numeri, io osservavo la sua grafia e mi chiedevo se anche io - un giorno - sarei riuscita a scrivere così tanto bene, con così tanta grazia, ma poi finisce che di grazia nel mondo non ce n'è più, se ci pensi. Di sicuro non ce n'è per te, per i tuoi sforzi, per il culo tanto che ti fai per fare le cose per bene.
E com'è che io sei diventata tu? Com'è che ne parlo come dall'esterno, come di una storia che avevo letto in estate, davanti alla zanzariera della camera in piazza Caduti di Cefalonia, il numero non lo ricordo.
Com'è che sono arrivata così tanto lontana da me stessa?

“In 1968, I did a documentary film with Ravi Shankar called ‘Raga’ [parts filmed in Big Sur on June 10 and 11, 1968, seen here in the trailer for the movie], and in that film Ravi said, 'Music is the only language I really understand, for I believe in Nada Brahma, meaning “The sound is God.”’ All music, whether it’s deep within in the cosmos, or it becomes more gross in the physical world, is still based on the subtlest manifestations of God. I feel like Ravi does about music, and I want to see that sound.” - George Harrison, Billboard (December 5, 1992) “You know, though, the film [Raga] very nearly never made it. We had to stop production for 9 months because we ran out. The only reason RAGA finally became a reality is due to only one person — George Harrison. There was a time when most of the film was completed and I was in terrible financial straits. I couldn’t really complete the film and I didn’t know where to turn. I was calling up all the distributors and screening, and they were all telling me, It’s a great film but it’s different and what are we going to do with it?’ Now, George Harrison is in the film, briefly, and we had just that relationship — doing the film. He did his piece and that was it. But out of desperation I called him to see if he could pull any weight with the distributors. He came over and saw the film, and then he just got up and walked out. I figured it was all over, but he called the next morning and said, ‘What do you need?’ I said, ‘I need distribution.’ And he said, ‘You need money to finish it.
