radio boyfriends au i donāt even know
Eugene sips his latte and shudders, puts it down and stares at it, mentally cursing his editor. Heās reviewing one of those tiny excuses for a cafe in the city that lacks seating just enough that it seems exclusive and so therefore all of Londonās hipsters seem to want to eat at it.Ā
Truly, heād thought even Londonās hipsters would have better taste.
Eugene is halfway through his scathing review of the coffee (tastes like burnt burning) and the decor (table numbers are held by garden gnomes, what the fuck, seriously) when someone clears their throat from across his poorly painted, very unstable table. Eugene looks up at a shock of red hair, freckles and the bluest eyes he has maybe ever seen.Ā āCan I sit here?ā the guy says, but he is already sitting down opposite, putting his number (garden gnomes, godĀ why?) on the table next to Eugeneās.Ā
āPlease do,ā Eugene says wryly, and the guy smiles and oh. Eugene hasnāt felt such an instant attraction to someone in a really, really long time.Ā āSorry,ā the guy says, sounding completely unrepentant.Ā āThereās nowhere else.ā
Eugene looks around. There is, for reasons he cannot understand, actually nowhere else. Admittedly there are maybe fourteen places anyone can sit, but still. Nowhere else.Ā
āIāll be a while,ā Eugene says after a second, apologetically, and the guy shrugs.Ā
āIām not with anyone,ā he says, and thereās just enough of a lean on the words that Eugene feels his face heat up.Ā āOkay,ā he says, and the guyās face crinkles into that smile again and Eugene canāt think of a single thing to say.Ā āIām Jack,ā the guy says finally, and Eugene takes the proffered hand.Ā
āEugene.ā
āPleasure to share this tiny table with you, Eugene.āĀ
Eugene snorts.Ā āYou havenāt tasted the coffee yet.ā
āBad?ā
āSo bad.ā
āThatās a shame,ā Jack says, but his smile says otherwise and when the food comes - terrible as expected - Eugene canāt bring himself to care about burnt toast and under-poached eggs.Ā
(did i send you this yet?) When you get this, you must publicly post something nice about at least 5 different people you follow, then copy and paste this in each of their ask boxes :)
Thank you, my friend! i did indeed receive it, but I was too tired to reply immediately, and it then passed me by. Bless your soul for taking the time to resend!Okay
1. radioabel is my sibling and the most amazing person to grace the earth. I am 99.9% sure that we have met before in another life or 20, because I couldĀ notĀ have known it for only 2 months! It is so kind and lovely and it likes my poetry too so thatās A+!
2. bisexualzuko is my girlfriend and not a day has gone by where i havenāt thought āDarn sheās so cute, frickā. I could go on. Also, she can drawĀ andĀ write which isĀ horrendouslyĀ unfair. Sheās always kind and somehow always manages to put up with dark days. Her headcanons destroy me. I wrote poetry for her one time so thatās how you know I love her.
3. sokka-the-man is a literal human that exists. How is it that someone so kind and jovial can walk the face of the earth for all of my life without me knowing? I would like to talk to the manager.Ā
4. flowergirlrobichiko is SO nice to me and I really do not understand it! They arenāt afraid to say ālook thatās going to put you in danger and i wonāt stand for itā and I am forever indebted to them for being so brilliant at listening to my bullshit.
And 5. queer-suki might not have foreseen this, but GOD they are amazing. They are a fellow theatre nut and are currently the only australian i know who knows the existence of Next to Normal. Oh yeah. AUSTRALIAN meaning they completely understand all the horrible casualties our weather wages against us. Thatās super nice to have.
(Bonus! Hiyas is so kind and empathetic, and wow sheĀ understandsĀ everything I say, and she always offers a hug and a warm cup of tea and I donāt know where Iād be without er! Sheās one of my oldest friends, and one of the few originals I still actively talk to. Sheās pretty cool.)

The Story of Radio Abel
Warning: This post contains spoilers for the entirety of Season 3 Radio Mode!
Procrastinating from writing this blogpost, I decided to do a bit of digging through old files to try to find the very first bit of Radio Abel I wrote (scroll to the end of this post). Itās dated to exactly three years ago (coincidentally, to my 26th birthday), and contains this apology in the margin: āa first stab, a bit too sentimental maybe, but you get a bit of a sense of the banter / tension between themā. I guess that just about sums up this post as well: āa bit too sentimental, maybe, but you get a sense of the banter: The Story of Radio Abelā.
If youāre reading this, youāve heard the final parts of this seasonās radio mode, and youāll know that this is goodbye. After three years, Iāve decided to give Jack and Eugene the happy ending Iāve been longing to since their first transmission and let someone else take over the airwaves around Abel Township. Iām a fanboy at heart, and I could no longer resist the temptation to send them into the West. The boys and I are off the air for good.
It has been a real privilege to write these characters for the past three seasons, and to work with such an incredibly talented group of actors in bringing them to life. Amy, Felix, Nathan and Rhys are the reason that radio mode ever made you laugh, if it did, cry, god forbid, or feel anything else at all under the sun. Working with them has been a joy since the beginning and I canāt ever thank them enough for everything.
Whatever else I thought when we started working on the radio stuff, Iād never imagined how warmly it would be received, and whatever else has happened in the past three years, the communityās reaction has been a constant source of light in my life. Thanks to everyone whoās listened to our dumb radio show, whether you liked it or not, and whether youāve told us about it or not. Without an audience, weād be nothing other than five people in a soundproof booth talking to ourselves.
Alright, enough with the soppy stuff. As this is the last youāll see of them, here is a list of things you probably donāt know about Jack and Eugene:
Eugene came first, and was originally on his own. This was short-lived as writing nothing but monologue was driving me crazy.
His name, embarrassingly, comes from my favourite episode of āBand of Brothersā: āBastogneā - the main character in that episode being Eugene Roe, and the whole thing taking place in the Woods.
Once it became clear that having a solo radio host wouldnāt work, I did the laziest thing possible to make the earliest scenes into dialogue: I took all of āGeneās self-corrections and interruptions and put them under a new voice: Jack Holden. Eugeneās habit for self-correction is, unfortunately, something we share in buckets.
Jack got his first name because it played nicely with āGeneā, and the āHoldenā came from the only British player at that yearās World Series of Poker Main Event Final Table.
Jackās location on day zero is just a big love-in for this song.
Eugeneās old career is pretty much just stolen right from Nathanās life. If you havenāt seen any of his food and drink reviews, go now! Any time thereās a foodie reference in radio mode, Iāll write something as a placeholder and then wait for Nathan to give me something better during the recording.
The season two radio clip āSmiling Tooā is an original song that Rhys brought in with him one day, having written it on the way to the studio and asking if he could include it in the game.
And finally, before I hand over to Naomi to explain a little bit about how season four radioās going to work, here are some of my favourite moments from the last three years of recording. Let me know what yours are!
Amy barely being able to contain her laughter while recording āThe Ablersā.
Felix dancing while he rapped during āMC Cheesemanā
Richard Bellās amazing sound design on the first three clips of season two radio.
Rhys and Nathan doing impressions of each other in season one (this bit was entirely improvised between takes - just the boys messing around with each other).
Everyone singing āRunning Down To Cubaā.
Nathanās insanely heart-breaking delivery of the line āThey never brought him homeā.
Hearing all the community call-in clips and having loads of fun writing responses.
Felixās face when I played him the clip of a fan proposing to Phil (he had no idea what was coming).
Rhys recording the āEugene is sickā clips. We had to record this stuff at 5.30am as Rhys was heading off on a tour that day, so it was a very bleary-eyed session, which added to the atmosphere.
All the stupid sound effects in āRunner Zeroā, as well as that theme tune! We spent quite a bit of time on these sections, but mostly because we couldnāt avoid corpsing. One of the best things about recording the radio content has been how consistently we struggle to get through takes without laughing.
So, thatās it from me. Itās been an absolute pleasure to bring you Radio Abel for three years. Stay safe out there ā Matt Wieteska (@gamecat).
And a word from Naomi:
Well. Iāve teared up, and Iām sure you have too. When Matt first told me he wanted to stop writing Radio Abel of course I did what any good Lead Writer would do and imprisoned him in my basement, got out my lump hammer and mentioned that āthe operation was called hobblingā. But even in the face of my uncannily accurate impression of Kathy Bates, he remained adamant. And, after some treatment in a state correctional facility, Iāve come to accept his choice.
Over the years Iāve seen enough writers try to take over other writersā beloved characters to know that it just doesnāt work. The fans can tell. It always feels āoffā. So Mattās retirement means Jack and Eugeneās retirement too. The ending heās given them is beautiful and right: it feels like where those characters were always heading, where they were always supposed to be.
It would be wrong, I think, to try to replace Jack and Eugene outright. So there will be radio mode in Season 4, but weāre going to be mixing things up, trying out some new ideas and new characters, keeping radio mode as a lighthearted counterpoint to the Oh God Itās So Dark And Why Am I Crying of our missions. Iāve got some fabulous writers lined up to write radio in Season 4, and those of you who know how much I love the salty tears of the players will be glad to know that Iām not planning to be one of them!
And a little sliver of comfort for you: though Matt created Jack and Eugene, Phil and Zoe were created by Rebecca Levene, so you might just hear a little something from them every now and then.
Jack and Eugene have been part of whatās made Zombies, Run! great, and Iām sad beyond words to see them go. But Matt Wieteska, with everything from his patient, thoughtful, clever and insightful direction to his skills at game design, to his letting us *use his bedroom* to record Season 1, has been a much bigger contributor to all the success weāve had, and to the million+ players weāve helped get fitter. So though Iām sad to see Jack and Eugene go, Iām so grateful that we still have Matt on our team. Thank you, Matt.
ultimatexshield, radio-abel,Ā andĀ thereisnoflameinthedarknessĀ interrupted your reading.
"May I help you?" Yin Niao asked, propping her cheek onto her fist. The book in her hands was now shut, a red bookmark slipped between the pages to keep her place.Ā
