The poker game started off competitive, everyone focused, chips stacked high and low, betting being raised or folded, gold held off in piles. And with Killer winning almost every hand, it was growing some mild frustration among the group, at least that is until the game shifted into simply keeping their hands busy during conversation.
Cross was the dealer during the game, shuffling the stack of cards with practiced efficiency, and distributing the needed amount, and placing the stack off to the side just in reach.
βDid you see the way Fell tripped over himself this morning going towards Dustβs room-β Killer grinned, leaning back as he nudged a chip forward, β- raise.β
Fellβs sockets narrowed in his direction, ready to bite back on the comment. Swap next to him held back a laugh, glancing down as Cross flicked him a fresh card with a smooth twist of the wrist.
βI did! I swear, he looked like a cartoon character falling in slow motion. And somehow, he still caught his coffee mid-air!β Dust at his left tried to hide his smile past his glass of gin, watching as Fellβs obviously annoyed expression grew from Swapβs right. βIβm sitting right here, FYI!β he growled.
Frostbite could only roll his eye lights on the conversation unfolding, βUnbelievable.β he murmured, drumming his fingers lightly on his stack as Cross ruffled the remaining deck. βFold.β
Killer picked up one of the chips from his stacks, spinning it between his fingers, eyes flickering up to Horror who hadnβt yet said anything in favor of snacking on the platter of cheese and crackers they had all been sharing for the last hour or two. βHas anyone else noticed how much of a good mood the boss has been in lately?β Cross asked aloud, earning a few hums of acknowledgment from the group.
Fell flicked a card towards the center, letting it land on top of the small pile. βYeah, the guy hasnβt barked many orders for the last month or two. And last I checked we got more days off this month than in three.β a slew of smoke clouds left pat his teeth and nasal hole as he exhaled, the cigar between his fingers tapping against the ashtray in front of him.
Horror could only grunt a response, pushing a few chips forward, eyes tracing Crossβ hand who slid another card into the pile. βRaise.β
Frostbite brushed his scarf past his shoulder as he shifted in his seat, βIβm sure the bossβ right hand knows of why, considering heβs been spotted sneaking off into Nightmareβs room more often than not.β the statement alone put eyes onto Killer now, who could only grin under the attention.
βWeβve been having sex, thatβs probably why heβs in such a stellar mood lately~β Killer chuckled, tapping his fingers on his stack as he leaned back in his seat.
Dust spat out his drink, coughing into his hand from the force while Swap patted his back in assistance.
Crossβ face grew two shades darker as he riffled the remaining deck to ready the next hand. βStars above, Killer!β the guardsman exclaimed, Fell couldnβt help but cackle with amusement.
Frostbite actively shrank back into his seat, regretting ever mentioning anything in the midst of their card game. Horror simply shook his head, rolling his singular eye light whilst he slipped another cracker with cheese past his teeth.
Dust finally composed himself enough to turn back towards Killer with a bewildered expression, βYouβve been sleeping with our boss?!β Swap tried to hold back his own laughter behind his hand, absentmindedly nudging his pile of chips forward just as Cross dealt the next card with a flick.
Killer opened his mouth to reply with some witty comment, though snapped back shut when a cold hand met the bare bone of his shoulder. Nightmare had materialized right behind him, and with how everyone had silenced, Killer had figured that. He bent his neck backwards over the chairβs back, smiling up at Nightmare who took in the game they were playing.
A dark eerie hum left his teeth before he bent down just enough to speak directly beside Killerβs skull. βPardon my interruption, but I request your presence in my quarters forβ¦ personal matters.β the others shared a few knowing glances, especially now as Nightmare dematerialized into the ground, disappearing from sight entirely.
The seemingly innocent smile Killer had on his face upturned further into a sharper grin, pushing his chair out as he stood. He grabbed his glass from the table, shot back the dark liquid in a single gulp, then pushed his chair back in.
βThe boss needs me, Iβm sure you all heard~ enjoy your game~!β Killer sing-songed, before he blinked out of the air, vanished from their sights.
They all sat in silence for a moment, before Fell pushed his chips forward with a grin of his own. βBets on, who bottoms? Killer or Nightmare?β which immediately caused a stir among everyone still sitting at the table.

The storm hit that afternoon above the secluded castle, clouds heavy with condensation that grew the sky dark as night. The rain already grew strong as it lashed against stained glass, lightning flashing past rattling windows, torches flickering from the subtle winds drawn through the empty halls, and thunder loud enough to shake the chandeliers suspended from high ceilings.
Killer was delighted!
More than so if you saw the expression on his face, though it was much to dim to see it properly.
He stood in the middle of the grand hall, lightning illuminating him in full every few passing moments. "THIS IS PERFECT!!" He all but shouts out to no one in particular, arms thrown out from his sides like a celebration.
"You are obnoxious." Dust calls out from the upper floor in passing, lugging a box of papers, books stacked neatly on top. Killer dismissed him with a wave of his hand, his attention turned to that of the click of heels coming from the hallway to his left. Nightmare approaches, a long worn scroll in one hand, various others tied neatly with twine tucked under his other arm, and a candelabra held up with a tendril.
Killer is quick to slide up to the king's side, hands reaching to wrap around the other's bicep, his smile more sweet than cutting like it had been a few moments ago. "You look bored." Killer drawns out his words, earning him a raised brow from Nightmare, who continued walking towards the west wing where his office was located.
"I am not, if your observations think to be correct." Nightmare hums, pushing open the door of his office now that they've reached it, the space lighting up from the windows in passing. Killer delatches from him the moment the office door opens in favor of leaning in its doorway, arms crossed over his chest as he watches Nightmare lay out the open scroll on the desk, and slips away the others into the shelving with his tendrils.
"I'm just saying, right now... is a perfect time to have alittle fun... you and me, don't you think?" Killer all but purrs in the king's direction, tail swishing behind him now as Nightmare turned his attention to him. "And what is it that you intend we do for fun, my dear?" Nightmare doesn't receive a verbal answer, watching as the space lights up another flash of white, only to blink and see Killer gone once that doorway darkens not a moment later.
He let's out a hum, blowing out the candelabra. "Very well."
Killer was gone in a matter of seconds, sprinting full speed down the left-hand corridor, his bare feet padding down the strips of carpet lining the middle of the halls, only to slap against stone tile with every sharp turn he took. He vaulted over a misplaced bench at one moment, sliding under a table the next, and even kicked off from a wall to pivot directions when he found himself slide.
For a mere second, the hallway he was dashing down lit up like a spotlight from the passing windows, revealing Nightmare hot on his heel and much closer than expected. Killer's eyes widened with interest, a laugh bubbling out as he took another quick turn. "You're enjoying this!" he calls out breathlessly, narrowly missing a lashing tendril reaching out for him. The moment Killer gets to the staircase, he all but leaps onto the banister and slides down it with rapid speed, jumping off last second to avoid crashing into the intricate carvings at the bottom.
Nightmare did not use the stairs.
He vaults off from the top of the stairwell, his cloak billowing behind him with the rush of movement, landing several inches away from where Killer had been only a moment prior before giving chase again much closer now.
Killer yelped delightedly, a sharp cackle leaving his teeth as he continued off down the corridor towards the castle's gallery. "That's cheating!!" Nightmare could only grin at his words, "There are no rules to this game we play." He responds, following Killer only a few steps behind.
They dash through the castle gallery now, one wall lined with towering windows in intricate detailing, the storm light flickering through in pulses that illuminate the paintings on the opposite side.
Each flash of light revealing Nightmare a few steps closer, every patch of darkness hides Killer enough to gain distance.
Killer ducks into another neck in the castle, nearly colliding with Cross who jumps out of the way last second, only to duck to the ground when Nightmare rounds the corner and leaps over him like he was a mere obstacle in his path to catching his prey.
Killer could only laugh as he looked back at how frazzled the guard looked, before turning forward not missing a step to get as far away from his predator as possible.
For a moment Killer suspects he's lost the King when he can no longer hear footsteps behind him, arms reaching out as he bursts into the throne room just as lightning explodes across the sky, flashing the entire room in silver. And just as it had, Killer caught the sight of Nightmare stepping in from an opposite archway at the same time till the room was casted back in darkness when their eyes met.
Killer bolts it the moment Nightmare moves again, shooting up the dais, across the platform of his throne, and leaps down from the other side behind it. He doesn't get far however as Nightmare cuts him off halfway down the steps, a tendril shooting out and catching his ankle mid-jump.
Killer tumbles forward, only to be caught by another dark appendage around the waist before he could hit the cold stone below.
Killer laughs wildly the moment he's lifted up a few feet in the air, pulled backwards, and spun around till he was face to face with his King.
Adrenaline was heavy in his veins, breath quickened, his soul racing like a hummingbird's wing.
Another sound of thunder rolls in, another flash of lighting that now illuminates the both of them pressed close.
Nightmare's tendrils lower Killer down, slithering back once he was standing on his own.
He raises a hand to Killer's face, gently lifting his chin to get a better look at his beloved.
"You were predictable." Nightmare spoke, leaning in close, his other hand sliding to the small of Killer's back. Killer could only grin, resting the palm of his hands on either side of Nightmare's shoulders.
"You liked it." He coos, leaning in to meet Nightmare in the middle for a long tender kiss in the dark.
Nightmare hums as he slowly pulls away from the kiss, watching as Killer licks his lips with satisfaction. "Again~?" he grins, leaning up in attempt to kiss Nightmare again, only to be met with a finger to his teeth.
"Five second head start." Its the only warning Killer gets, the moment Nightmare's hand releases from his back he makes a run for it with a grin spread across his face, the King watching him disappear down the hall with amusement.
