I’m addicted to the internet. At least I think I am, but not’s the secret i want to reveal to you at this moment. After having the internet cut off at my place I came to the conclusion that wifi should be free.
Yes free. Everywhere. even in remote locations...
My reasoning for that is simply because the internet has become a vital part of society and we need it. There is a definitely a NEED for the access but how much depends on you personal needs. Another reason for me is that as of last year approximately August 2014 or so I didn’t renew my phone plan. I broke my phone screen so bad that I could only call people. There was no texting, no instagram, and no mobile access to anything. Just a device with calling abilities.
It was during this hiatus that I’ve come to realize a few things about how I use my phone.
1. I don’t call/text a lot of people of regular basis.
2.I was paying for data I didn’t use
3. I used my phone camera mainly for instagram
With these conclusions I made an intentional decision not to buy a phone but to buy and Ipod touch and use it for the mobile capabilities that phones are now built to have. What I ended up doing was just getting an app that uses wifi as a means to call/text contacts for free. I’ve had that app for about a year now and it’s worked well for me simply because I would plan how I would contact people. The main risk in that is that if I am in an extreme situation where I have no access to wifi or other human beings with cell phones then I’m screwed but in that case I will hopefully be mentally prepared for when that happens.
Then I found this video and this one , and I find that they are both connected for the times that we find ourselves in.
I think what has changed is that we are told through phone advertising that we need this phones with access to the internet. Yet we don’t need access 24/7. We need access yes, but we don’t need it all the time. If we are at work, or at school or just hanging out we only need small doses.
I get social angst when I catch myself looking at instagram or seeing other people on their phones instead of talking to each other. It’s changing how people relate to each other for the good and bad.
Anyway as I type this from a coffee shop fueled by the capitalistic model that provides the very thing that I need; access to the internet. I know there is a changing social landscape when people are on their devices in their free time. I guess it’s because we all feel this weird social obligation to be constantly updated with everything happening, even though not much is happening. Life is happening, so once you’re done reading this just consider the following 2 things:
1. The internet is great tool and it comes with great responsibility, therefore use it well to your advantage before the it cost too much to actually have.
2. Why pay for something that we need? Water is something that we need or else we die....so why should we pay for it...while people in poorer die due to lack of clean water?
That’s all. Maybe I will post more about my angst about the internet in our digital age in the future.
