Danish artist Carl Probsthayn (July 18, 1770 - 1818) was trained at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen and friends with Bertel Thorvaldsen and other successful artists. He even won the Academy’s Large Gold Medal and an annual stipend - but died at age 47, stricken by poverty and mental confusion. Contemporaries suggested he had “gotten in too deep in the world of his etchings”...
