On August 7th, 2015, an NJ State Police officer and a Mercer County Sheriff's officer shot 14 year old Radazz Hearns 7 times in the legs and pelvis as he fled from the plain clothes officers. The officers, accompanied by a second state trooper, pulled up to Radazz and two of his friends in an unmakred minivan on a Friday evening as the trio were walking. Radazz fled from the officers, and as he ran, officers opened fire on him, shooting at least 10 rounds, striking him 7 times. Witnesses confirm that Radazz was unarmed at the time he was shot. Eye witness Rhonda Tirado gave her account, saying "Those police were amped and they didn't give that little boy a chance. There was no room for chase. They just shot that little boy." The NJ Attorney General is leading the investigation into the shooting, and has provided little to no information, and city officials have been slow to respond, demanding that the community "wait for the facts." More than a week after the shooting, we still don't have the names of the officers involved, and the NJ Attorney General has refused to relinquish the investigation to the US Attorney General, despite pressure from officials including Congresswoman Bonnie Watson-Coleman. Radazz has since come home from the hospital, and is recovering, however his family faces mounting medical costs in order to care for his needs. A power reclining chair, medical bed, pull up bar, and other medical equipment are pressing needs for the family. Organizers in the community have come together to try and secure financial support for the family to ease the burden of caring for an injured child and the stress and trauma that has been inflicted on them by this tragic incident.
