Every once in a while Tony Stark thinks back on the battle against Thanos and his interactions with Stephen Strange, New York's Wizard extraordinaire and keeper of the Time Stone... Well former keeper of the Time Stone at least.
He recalls the events leading up to the fight on Titan with perfect accuracy, as if the images have been permanently branded into his mind. Him and Peter trying to save him from Thanos' lackies, getting caught up on the spaceship only to be told Stephen would sacrifice them both for the stone if that was necessary. Which was fair of course, the inventor hadn't expected the Sorcerer to sugar coat things for them. If it was their lives versus the fate of the universe then that was an easy pick.
It only made Strange's gambit quite a shock to him, watching him give up the Time Stone for him. How could he do such a thing? Why would he so easily abandon his previous remark only to do the one thing Strange said he would never do? It perplexed him for years afterwards, his own guilt mingled with the taste of regret that in a way it was his own fault half of the universe faded to dust. Turning into his desperate need to fix it, to do something with the sacrifice that had been made for him and help those who had lost so much because of it.
Almost every day he wondered why Stephen did it, what he could have possibly seen in those thousands upon thousands of outcomes that made him think Tony was worth trading for the Time Stone, for the universe. Now that they had won and they had both miraculously survived maybe he'd ask him that because he honestly couldn't think of a single logical reason why.
The Doctor had to have thought it was the smartest play available, if there was one thing he knew about Stephen Strange was that, just like him, he was a grade-A control freak and being wrong or having doubts wouldn't fit into his carefully calculated plans. Tony found it infuriating trying to piece it all together, and clearly Strange had known something that made the equation work enough to pick the option of giving up the stone he had sworn to protect.
Next time he saw him he'd ask, no doubt about it.
