Yo have you talked about the parallels between Hedwig and Tommy and Yitzhak and Hedwig? Cause I remember listening to the soundtrack with no context but the Wikipedia and I thought that the long grift was actually Yitzhak to Hedwig and wicked little town reprise was Hedwig to Yitzhak and when I found out they were actually tommy songs it's like I'm bad at words but parallels
I have not talked about that yet!! But wow, thatâs a very interesting story. And because I love hatai and parallels, I will def be very tangent-y about this:
I think Tommy and Yitzhak are parallels in that they are extensions of Hedwig herself - but in what she lacks.Â
Tommy represents Hedwigâs loss of masculinity and her lack of success as a musician because she lacks that masculinity.Â
Similarly, Yitzhak represents Hedwigâs lack of femininity (given that she is a better drag queen and can hit higher notes and is just more talented than Hedwig).Â
I think that it is very significant that Hedwig worships Tommy (wrote him songs, took him under her wing, follows his band around even after his betrayal, talks about him constantly, was willing to âreminisceâ with him prior to the stage play) and then is cruel to Yitzhak (makes him give up drag, constantly demeans/mocks him, sabotages his success).
Itâs almost like Hedwig is more remorseful and craves that masculine part of herself (that had been taken from her via the botched sex operation) while she is more resentful and scornful of her femininity (that had been forced upon her via the botched sex operation and her cover identity as a female).
But yeah. Thatâs not really what you were asking for, but itâs a point that came to my mind when you wanted me to discuss parallels between these two men in Hedwigâs life.
