Rabbit cake
Books from Tin House!
"....but I'd figured out now that death never makes sense, no matter how someone dies: murder, accident, old age, cancer, suicide, you're never ready to lose someone you love. I decided death will always feel unexplained; we will never be ready for it, and you just have to do the best you can with what you have left. That was what I'd finally pieced together, and I felt like I had solved a major mystery."

This Easter I decided to attempt cake decorating! This was my first try and I must say I think it turned out pretty good, plus it was tons of fun! I hope you enjoy trying this as much as I did!
Bunny Cake:
Begin by making two 9″ round layers of Devil’s Food Cake and let cool. Once cooled, cut one cake as pictured above and assemble as ears and bow tie.
Next make and color your buttercream icing (color can be anything you want for the body and bowtie, get creative! Though, you will need pink, black and white for ears, nose, mouth, and eyes). I prefer to make my icing homemade so at the bottom is the recipe I learned from my mom.
If you think you might get your display plate messy, place wax paper under the edges of the bunny and slide them out when the icing hardens. Start by spreading a thin layer of white icing on the top of the case this is the “Base Layer”. Using a size 8 star tip, dot the body colored icing onto the cake creating a furry affect. Buttercream Icing melts w the heat of your hand so if the stars stop looking clean and get mushy just pop that bag into the fridge, grab another color and start on a different part. Keep going until bunny looks like the “End of Part One” pictured above.
Let the cake harden in the fridge for 15-30 min. Remove from fridge and begin Part Two. Using the same sized star tip create a round secondary layer on the lower part of his face, this is for the nose and mouth and to add 3D affects. You will use the star tip for the nose as well. Then use the large circle tip for the whites of the eyes and a small circle tip for the rest of the details.
I also added a secondary raised layer to the bow tie to help differentiate the tie and the knot.
Mom’s Buttercream Icing:
3/4 cup Veg. Shortening 3/4 cup Butter 1 tbsp Clear Vanilla Extract 1 tbsp Butter Extract 1/4-1/2 tsp Salt 2 lbs Powdered Suger 1/4-1/2 cup Water
"I do feel that Dolly helped me with my first novel, both with the conception of it and with the writing of it. I didn’t thank her in the acknowledgements because I felt that would have been crazy (on the other hand, I did thank my dog), but in some very important ways, Dolly Parton has been my literary inspiration and guide." — Annie Hartnett
