OK, so apparently, in the sweet poison quit plan (the book I started reading yesterday) it says how to quit sugar from your diet.... I can't help but feel like I have been slightly ripped off.
Why you ask? Well, it turns out, David Gillespie's advice is this - don't eat it..... Really? Really?! Dont eat it? And there was me thinking that to quit sugar I have to eat it by the bagful!
I understand that he says to stop eating it while doing certain things or in certain situations, but thats just common sense! I thought there would be more to it than that, not just dissociation from it your bad habits. Hell, that would have been my first guess anyways....
Despite this, the beginning of the book is quite informative and the first 60 or so pages are definitely worth a read. As far the rest of it? I think i'll be ok on my own from here on out.....
Relapse: January 2014
It started when I was sent to the emergency room in MMC for a really bad skin infection. It was all over my arms, back and legs. I had more restrictions that I could handle effectively - no coffee, chicken, seafood, eggs, chocolate, processed meat, bread, peanuts, tomatoes, mushrooms, too-many-to-mention.
Not only did I have this crazy diet, but I had to use special water when taking a bath and putting on the ointment took half an hour, twice a day. PLUS! I could not even go to the gym
I guess my coping skills are far, far FAAARR from superior and after trying to keep it together for almost a month -- there I was, standing on top of the toilet as I lit up.Â
I wish I could take that day back.
It's been an every day battle since then. Though I feel like I'm losing on some days, I don't feel completely lost - I'm smoking probably about two to three sticks a day, compared to my 10 or more from the previous years.Â
The hard part is having to remind myself of that when I fall into my black pit of negativity.
I'm going to try again and these are the things I will do differently:
1. I have joined becomeanex.org. I have also started tracking my cigarettes and set a new quit date - February 2! 2 DAYS!
2. I have to make this a priority, if I want it to happen. I know this is pretty obvious, but it entails a lot of things -Â
2.a. Do not join Barney for smoke breaks in the lung center. If I really want to spend my 15 minute break together, I will go for a walk around Tower 2 and invite him to come along. Change of location, change of pace = less trigger
2.b You need to create a temporary distance from your smoking friends - This sucks because I love them dearly (T, L, A), but I have non smoking friends that make great company too - Lea and Luan (virtually via viber - which works because Lea is usually awake until halfway through my shift). They're harder to find at work, but I think I have some non-smoking friends at the salt mines too = must make more
2.c. You need to lighten up at work - Accept that something's gotta give, if I'm make quitting a priority, which leads us to #3.
3. Come up with more productive ways to manage stress - Go for walks. Draw on the notebook. Actually sit down for a meal! And, for the love of GOD, do not do anything work related during my breaks! (except for EOWs!)Â
