Of course, we all know the importance of changing the engine oil regularly. But one customer of ours had to pay dearly for opting for a “cheaper” oil changing solution. At a quick lube centre in a fuel station, our customer was tempted by a cheap and quick oil change for his Skoda. Instead of draining the old oil properly, the technician attempted to vaccum it out, and ended up removing 1L oil and leaving 4L in the tank. Then 5L of fresh oil was filled on top of this, meaning there was an excess oil. How do we know all this? The car died on him 10 minutes after the refilling, and he had to have it towed to our shop, where we discovered the excess oil in the tank. So why did his engine die? As it happens, excess oil can be lethal for the engine. This is what too much oil does to your engine: 🔺causes spark plugs to foul up. 🔺clogs up the catalytic converter. 🔺damages the oxygen sensors. 🔺gets aerated and foamy, acts like a bad lubricant, and causes damage to piston rods and valves resulting in catastrophic engine failure in the worst case scenario. Luckily in this case, the customer did not suffer any major damage because the on-board electronics kicked in and  killed the engine off. We had to replace his fouled up spark plugs. An engine compression test showed that his engine was otherwise fine. So, three lessons in this cautionary tale: 🔺Know your engine oil capacity and make sure it isn’t surpassed during oil change. 🔺Avoid quick lubes; go to a proper service centre to get your oil changed. 🔺If your engine dies after an oil change, don’t attempt to force start. Get your car towed to the service centre. Once your car is checked into the shop, one of our excellent ASE certified technicians starts the process for your oil change service.  The inspection focuses a lot on several important safety aspects of your car, while the visual courtesy inspection includes checking the exterior lights and wiper blades, interior lights and warning lights.  The technicians also check for any abnormal noises the vehicle may be making during a road test.   We’ll also inspect the battery and terminals, air filter, all of the belts and hoses, and the throttle body.  Under the vehicle we’ll do a visual inspection of all the steering components, CV/U-joints, shocks, struts, exhaust system, and any apparent alignment issues.  We also inspect, check and advise you regarding the levels & condition of all of the vital fluids in your vehicle to include windshield washer fluid, engine oil, transmission fluid, front differential, rear differential, transfer case, radiator coolant, power steering fluid, and brake fluid. Our technician clearly records the findings on the inspection sheet and also notes any other recommendations, as well as the manufacturers recommendations for services that may be due on your vehicle based on the accumulated mileage. The service advisor in the front office will inform you of the inspection results, and make sure you get a carbon-copy of the inspection form with all of the suggestions & recommendations clearly marked on it for your records.  It’s also noted in our computer system so we can easily answer any future questions regarding service you may be interested in having us complete.  It’s our job at Integrity Auto Care Center to keep you informed about your vehicle and especially to inform you if we detect any safety issues with your car.   We will even take photos of issues we see with your vehicle so you can get a clear indication of why our recommendations are being made, if necessary.
