#quick tutorial

hi!! i tihnk i have but ill just reshare it again bc i have it on hand :D its a quick trick i picked up from ayeoops on instagram!! ( note: these days i usually put an extra multiply layer on top to keep lines a little darker, and posterization effect will make everything even crunchier )

I used this to make handfasting cords for friends and some other crafts ~ I thought I would share

so ive never been good at tutorials, so don’t expect something detailed here, but i CAN offer some tips! but as a general note, the sonic style doesnt have to look like one way, MANY sonic artists stylize them to fit their own style or what’s comfortable for them! so heres my way of drawing them !

first, lets start with something simple, a hedgehog! specifically, i will show you how to draw Riddle since he is one of the easiest (imho) of the designs ive made to draw! to me, the hedgehog is the basis of all characters really, if you know how to draw a hedgehog you can draw other species! i always start off with this general body shape

most male characters will follow this shape, but not all, for the sake of keeping this simple, i wont go into the different shapes. the main shapes that will be your friend while drawing sonic characters will be the circle and cylinders! usually legs and arms are a little longer as well as hands and feet being just a little bigger. these guys (mobians) are small most of them average in height around anything between 3ft to 4ft

this muzzle shape is universal, every species starts from this shape, if they have a beak or a long snout, it will start from this shape! (the nose placement is what will give the illusion of a longer snout) riddle, like sonic, has a mono eye (which basically means it doesnt connect to the muzzle in the center, you can have two eyes just by connecting them to the muzzle)

ive broken down riddles hair/quills into 4 parts, the quills that frame his face are a lot like amys, his back head quills follow a shape similar to shadows, but they arent as long, then are his bangs and the little hairs that form the heart shape

after that just add the clothes to the base body shape and here he is!

fun fact for my non sonic fans: did you know that male mobians aren’t technically allowed to wear pants? canonically they just arent supposed to! i, however, think this rule is DUMB!! so i give them pants

I'd be happy to give some advice :D

Let's start with Cups!

I first draw a (very lose) circle. Doesn't need to be perfect, just helps with keeping the head round.

Next I draw the crosshairs (idk what the real term is, but they look like crosshairs to me pff). This helps to keep the eyes leveled, even with perspective. The lines curve with the circle, kinda like they're wrapped the outside.

For the lip of the cup,,,,head,, I draw a curved line but not too curved. Also I don't use the very top of the circle.

Using the circle as a guide (don't be married to it, adjust if you need to) draw the rest of Cuphead's,,, head. Side note: I draw Cups head flatter than Mugs but you don't have to do that if you don't want. It's just a minor detail I like to do.

Last is the facial features! Using the crosshairs, draw Cup's eyes which start and end at the lip of the cup. The nose is at the center of the crosshairs. And then the mouth. And viola! You have drawn a cup boi

Now for Mugs!

Same idea as Cups except his eyes are differently shaped. Mugman has more elongated ovals. And also his nose is big enough to honk it

Gradient:

- multiply layer

- 100% opacity

- bold/ bright color

- Airbrush or brush plus Gaussian blur

(I put mine under the shading layers :))

Soft Lines

- Merge lineart

- Duplicate - hide top and lock alpha on bottom

- Bright color- fill it all

- Unlock alpha- Gaussian blur

Overlay

- 1 color or gradient

- Turn on a blending mode, my fave is 'color' but it depends on the effect you want

- Adjust as needed

(Sometimes I use 2 or 3)

Texture

- Find a texture you like. I use old paper or velvet

- Experiment with tint, blending mode, & opacity

(I used velvet here!)

Blur:

- Create a filter mask & set to Gaussian blur

- With a soft eraser, erase what you want to be in focus

choose qtgmc 30 fast as the preprocessor

then change the fps divisor from 2 to 4 

Hi! Some Anto’s meshes have no transparency issues at all, but some need to be edited (like meshes of any other creator). Also, some players have transparencies on all downloaded alpha hairs. I found a description of this problem here, there is also a solution in the comments.

As far as I know from my own experience, transparency issues are usually visible immediately in Milkshape if the mesh is assigned a dark hair color. If not visible, try setting "Transparency" to "Depth Buffered with Alpha Reference" and disable "Draw Backfaces". This makes it easier for you to identify transparency issues.

Transparency issues are a result of the layers of hair being in the wrong order, where the top layer is under the bottom for some reason. Accordingly, in order to fix this problem, you need to restore the order of the layers. Usually it is required to select the problem hair strand or part of it and Regroup it into a new group with higher Opacity in the Comment. In milkshape use Select by Faces and then Regroup button. Sometimes it is enough to select several vertices and push them, depending on the case, either inward or outward of the hairstyle.

But I recommend an easier way to regroup the strand of hair using a Blender. I use 2.76 version.

Just import your mesh in Blender (I choose .obj format) and set Edit Mode (1). Next click on “Limit selection to visible” button (2) - this will allow you to select backfaces too.

Press “A” to unselect all and start select hair strand with issue. Use the left mouse button + “B” to select one or a couple of vertices of this strand. Next press Ctrl + L and voila! - full strand selected. It remains only to press “P” and choose separate by Selection, this regroup selected hair strand.

Now you can export the modified mesh and enjoy the result. I recommend these settings for meshes with a lot of groups (don’t forget to select the necessary groups).
