"Please don't cry"
Big, fat tears fell from her eyes and splashed onto the table. Not even the stiffest drink in the joint was enough to dull the pain. She attempted to stifle a sniffle as the girl approached. She had the longest hair Meg had ever seen, and the colour was such a lovely gold. She had bright eyes and an innocent look to her. Meg let out a wistful sigh, remembering the days when her outlook on life had been a bit more positive.
"Crying? No, no you have me confused with someone else… Something in my eye…" She let out a sharp exhale, fully aware she was fooling no one. "Men are jerks."
"Who did this to you?"
"And stay out!"
Megara stumbled out of the shop and landed in the dust. "OK, OK, I'm out. Jeez, you don't have to be so rough. At least buy me dinner first." She gathered herself up and brushed herself off as best as she could. Chances were, she was a mess, but a large part of her didn't really care. She was long past the point of caring.
Stumbling over to a bench, she took a seat and ran her fingers through her hair. "What is the matter with me?"
"Who did this to you?"
She didn't recognize the man, but he seemed nice enough, so she decided to tone down the snark a notch. "Ugh, it was that blasted shopkeeper. He accused me of stealing. Me! Can you believe it? I mean, he wasn't wrong, but usually I can flirt my way out of these situations. He didn't have to be so rude about it."
"A smile looks pretty on you--wear one more often."
Today hadn't been the best of days. She'd had a nasty run in with a manticore, her resources were running low, and she was having a bad hair day. All in all, she wasn't in the greatest mood of all time. A scowl settled on her face, and she set her body language to a very clear "leave me alone."
"A smile looks pretty on you--wear one more often."
Clearly someone didn't get the message. She stopped in her tracks and looked over her shoulder. "Excuse me? I look pretty no matter what I'm wearing, and I never do it for a man. Now, can I help you?"
"Somebody's in a bad mood."
The voice came from out of nowhere, stopping Meg in her tracks. She rose and eyebrow and looked down. “Why yes, almost constantly.” It was pretty much her default state of being. “Is that a problem?”
It had barely registered with her that the source of the voice had been a young lion. In a world of gods and goddesses, a talking animal wasn’t the strangest thing she’d ever seen, but it still wasn’t something she saw everyday. “So, a lion, huh? How’s that working out for ya?”
