Laena swore as a particularly sharp rock dug itself into her knee, tearing both her nightgown and the skin beneath it. A small hiss escaped her mouth at the sensation of torn and tender skin exposed to the sharp bite of the cold, salty air. She could hear her mother scolding her for not watching where she was climbing, yet she had no time to stop and lament her minor injury. Despite the tears stinging at the corner of her eye, she quickly wrapped the now bleeding lightly wound with the torn remnant of her night dress. She had a dragon to claim.

Her twelfth name day was rapidly approaching and she was determined to claim a mount for herself, and not just any mount either. She was determined to ride Vhagar and no other dragon would do. It was just her luck that the great she beast had been seen on Driftmark's higher peaks. As she prepared for bed that night, she knew exactly what she had to do. If she wanted to claim her soon, she would have to move quickly and quietly. She doubted that the green lady would stay for long, and should she fail in her quest, she did not want to imagine the consequences that would be in store for her.
