A Queluz Palota az egyik utolsó nagy rokokó stílusú épület, amelyet Európában terveztek. A palota építési munkálatai 1747-ben kezdődtek Mateus Vicente de Oliveira portugál építész irányításával. Annak ellenére, hogy sokkal kisebb, a palotát gyakran portugál Versailles-nak nevezik. Az összehasonlítás indokolatlan: Versailles-t a "fenségesség megjelenítéseként" emlegetik, és azért építették, hogy kőbe véssék "Franciaország minden dicsőségét", míg a sokkal kisebb Queluz-i palota "inkább gyönyörű, mintsem csodálatos" és úgy néz ki, mint egy "nagyon drága születésnapi torta".
