The flashback in "Beach City Horror Club" is all about how Lars trying to explore his own feelings for boys with Ronaldo, whom he's heard is gay via schoolyard rumor, and then backing out and trying to reject his own sexuality. That's why he's so secretive. It's why he maintains distance by picking on Ronaldo to this day for fear It's why he destroys the evidence that he was enjoying time with "the gay kid." That evidence being the photo of him "carving our names in" like a heart in a tree.
