Exciting discovery today!! This is a queen bee who JUST emerged. π How can I tell? First, I found the hatched queen cell (second pic) with the cap still hanging. The bees will chew up that cap and recycle the wax eventually so I knew there was a new queen in the nuc. Second, look at how fuzzy and soft she is!! Just like worker bees, queens emerge soft and fuzzy. β€οΈ It takes a few days for their exoskeletons to toughen up, and that newborn fuzz will darken and shed during that time as well. I've never found a newborn queen before!! Virgins, yes, but never one who just emerged. Year 3 of beekeeping and still making new discoveries!! How could I not love bees?? Some good news to start the weekend off with! The queen from my package of dead bees is ALIVE. The queenless nuc already released her and have fully accepted her. β€οΈ I'm so grateful!! Also, my poor overwintered queen who I coated in paint has also survived to tell the tale!
