The Turn of the Key - Ruth Ware I can't remember when I very first started reading, but from the time I can remember reading, my favorites have always been mysteries. I went through a stretch in 5th grade where I was reading an entire Nancy Drew book every. single. day. until I'd read them all. I loved R.L. Stine, and Oklahoma's own, Bill Wallace, and The Box-Car Children. I liked the ones with human bad guys and the ones with ghosts, the creepier the better. Ruth Ware is a master at mystery and creep always, and I loved her retelling of the classic, The Turn of the Screw. (Interesting to read this shortly after writing a research paper of the Henry James novel, so I felt very close to both). Summary: Rowan Caine stumbles into a nannying job that seems too good to be true. High salary, picture-perfect family, luxurious "smart" home. The thing is that it isn't just too good to be true, it's a living nightmare that will end with her awaiting trial for the murder of one of the children. Writing to her lawyer from prison, she tries to explain the truth, to tell her side of the story. There was constant surveillance from the home's cameras, technology that turned lights and music on and off at random times of the day and night, a locked door in her room that seemed to lead to nowhere but surely lead to somewhere, a charming handyman she wasn't sure she could trust. She may be guilty of a few things, but she's adamant she's not guilty of murder. But someone is. And you will not see them coming. Fast-paced and suspenseful, this one will make you question how much technology is too much and who is really watching you through it. If you love mysteries or ghost stories, you'll love this one!
