En 1932, l’artiste allemand Max Beckman entame le portrait de sa seconde épouse Mathilde von Kaulbach, surnommée Quappi. Il achèvera le tableau en 1934 après avoir modéré le sourire de la figure, inquiet dans le contexte de la montée du nazisme dans son pays.
Cette toile me saisit par le tracé noir brutal des contours ainsi que l’expression envoûtante de Quappi. Mais ce sont ses mains qui m’ont captivée en premier, si graciles qu’elles semblent animées.
