I’m diggin’ on this captured category. But I got thrown for a loop. My preconceived notion was that it would be a time lapse-heavy category. Turns out, according to Vimeo, each video should literally capture an artistic expression or performance as the subject. This definition opens up the category to some unique videos.

For the most part, these videos require some effort on the part of the viewer. Initially, several of these videos seem boring, but stick with them, and you’ll notice some cool stuff happening. “Immaterials: Light painting Wifi” by Timo investigates the architecture of Wi-Fi signals in urban areas. The creators fashioned a measuring rod that lights up when it senses a Wi-Fi signal. Then they take long-exposure photographs of the rod, resulting in an illuminated wall of Wi-Fi terrain. It’s a real thrill for the inner science nerd. 

Another video worth mentioning is “SWEATSHOPPE Video Painting Europe” by SWEATSHOPPE. It’s a glimpse into the world of video painting. Yes, video painting is exactly what it sounds like—two artists under the cover of night paint videos onto walls. Don’t ask. I have no idea. The video opens with a warning: “The video you are about to watch was shot live, it does not use post production or paint.”
