Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! What's something the peoples of your world are working towards, their hope for tomorrow? Do they await the return of a god or a lost king, or do they work for greater international cooperation? Maybe they're striving for the stars, or to explore the depths of the seas? Tell us about the BIG picture of your world. What kind of legacy do they hope the next generation will inherit?
All those examples are lovely ambitions, sadly The Diamond Empire isn’t quite as noble. They are after all an empire.
Their aim is to conquer new territories.
On this continent there’s only a few pockets of resistence, Irae’s swampy tribal homeland to the south, the inconveniently frozen Kharderis to the north east, the pirates of the Saltflats and rumours of an underground rebellion.
Off this continent they only have a handful of colonies and outposts. There’s no other empire, alliance or coalition that could come close to challenging the Diamond Empire yet, but if they start taking over by force that could change quickly. Still, through diplomacy and underhand tactics, they’re slowly but surely encroaching.
On a more personal level each of the protagonists have different goals.
Emic wishes to rule and lead the Diamond Empire to victory after victory.
Coriander wishes to restore the glory of his house after the trechery of his father.
Irae wishes to protect his people, even if that means surrendering to the Diamond Empire, at least they’s survive.
Altwain wishes to expand the boundaries of magic, discover new combinations of Stones.
Mare wishes to protect her people, save those who cannot defend themselves to make up for when she was a child and couldn’t save her friends.
Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday, and Happy Pride Month! Tell us a little bit about how gender and/or orientations are expressed in your world
Well a lot of this I covered last week with religion. Gender expression is very tied into how various different places worship.
There’s Irae’s people where gender is chosen based on societal role and can change at will. The Diamond Empire where it’s based on assigned sex at birth, but transgender people are generally accepted. It’s still quite binary however.
For the Diamond Empire it helps that it covers quite so many cultures. Echesh for example is both matriarchal and the culture of the current Empress, though she grew up in Ridimi.
Gender and sex aren’t a barrier to jobs or status. Marriage can be between people of any gender and indeed more than two people. Inheritance does generally go to the biological children if any, but it’s considered normal to choose the child you consider most competent rather than automatically the oldest. In cases where the deceased didn’t specify, property and titles go to the oldest regardless of sex or gender.
Adoption and wards are pretty common, especially with same sex couples. There are cases where biological children will be passed over in favour of an adopted child or ward who is more likely to improve the family’s lot.
Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! You have your choice of questions here! Question 1: What is religion like in your world? What's popular, what's looked down upon, what's devout, what's lazy? Question 2: Let's talk hobbies! What are the popular hobbies in your world? What's useful? What's just there for fun? What builds morale? You can answer either one of those questions or, if you're feeling wild, both! Have a good day!
Religion is one I’ve put a good bit of thought into. The major deities of the region/Empire are Drendae and Arada, worshipped in basically any configuration possible.
The Ridimi, and therefore ‘default’, interpretation is that they represent binary phenomemnon. One is life, one is death. One is fire, one is water. One is sun, one is moon. One is light, one is dark. Where it gets a bit more complicated is that they’re also cyclical. They swap roles on a schedule where no pair of roles perfectly matches with another pair.
In Ridimi, Drendae is always male and Arada is always female.
These two gods are kinda the only ones worshipped, but they’re worshipped under enough different interpretations and titles that they’re a pantheon by themselves.
In Irae’s culture, the hunter-gatherer people of the swamp that Emic invades at the start of the book, Drendae and Arada have fixed aspects. Drendae is hunting, death, poison, danger. Arada is nurture, life, food, safety.
The gods are gendered the same as Ridimi, but the people are not. At fifteen each child picks a path and with it a gendered pronoun regardless of sex. This choice is not final and may be swapped multiple times throughout a lifetime. Irae is biologically female, but has chosen Drendae so uses male pronouns. There’s a certain amount of pressure for him to follow Arada just long enough to have a child, but his choice is respected and even if he did choose to have a child he’d be easily able to switch back to Drendae after the birth.
Emic’s mother’s mother’s country, Echesh, worships just Arada in her role as a harvest deity. Mare’s home island of Elmhearth on the Saltflats worships Drendae and Arada as male twins, but with the Ridimi style cycle. Coriander’s home of Timberdrift strictly enforces the Ridimi style, but allows the use of the names of the local pantheon to be used as titles in front of the name of whichever of Drendae or Arada is more applicable at the time.
Hobbies, I’ll cover for characters rather than everything anyone anywhere does for fun.
Emic: Hawking and hunting are traditional pastimes for Echesh nobility and despite never having visited the country, she is technically an Echeshi Duchess. The printing press exists and she likes to pretend that she’s reading big dense tomes of military strategy. In reality she has a serious soft spot for Heroic Adventure fiction.
Altwain: People tend to get the impression that he’s bookish, but he much prefers practical hobbies like knitting and wood carving. When he has access to suitable stones he will use his magic to shape them, either usefully or decoratively.
Mare: People tend to get the impression that she’s unrelentingly practical, but she much prefers a good book. Sure she knows how to mend her own socks or quickly whittle a spoon, but that’s not *fun*. She’ll play a hand or two of cards with the rest of her Corbel for whatever they have to gamble.
Coriander: He considers his interest in cooking shameful due to being nobility and can only justify it when he uses his small amount of magical talent for water manipulation to assist. His family couldn’t afford typical noble pursuits however, so he’s adept at the sort of things Emic would consider beneath both of them, like weaving or fishing.
Irae: Irae does not understand the word ‘hobby’, there’s no direct translation. His tribe has a storyteller/bard and he thinks that maybe when he’s too old to fight and hunt he’ll turn to Arada for that job. He sees it as something he’s working at though, listening and remembering the stories so he can tell them himself someday.

Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! Let's talk about communication. What are the most common ways for folks to stay in touch with each other? What are some Uncommon ones?
The most common is good old ink and paper. Literacy is near universal due to the Guild Schools set up to teach whichever trade as well as basics of history, numeracy, geography, law etc.
When a Grex (military unit of 500 soldiers) is out conquering they use homing pigeons to send messages back. Since that’s a one way system, the outpost or city will respond using magic.
Every Grex has six mages assigned to it. Five of them will be battle mages each working with a Turret (100 soldiers led by a Turi) and the sixth will be a Navigator with the ability to scry out the surrounding land using a jade tablet and small ruby. With the addition of a chalcedony stylus the Navigator can recieve messages seemingly painted on the jade tablet. A specific ink made of lapis lazuli is used by the sender and has no physical presence to the reciever. However, these messages can only be sent by one who knows the Navigator’s full Name. Also blue-green colourblindness would be a serious problem in reading it.
Theoretically, chalcedony and lapis lazuli could be used on any type of Stone attuned to a mage, but Navigation is the only magic to require a nicely sized tablet shaped Stone. Two way communication of this sort is rare due to hierarchy, knowing another’s full Name gives you power over them and aren’t shared freely, to the point that every soldier in a Grex will have a unique nickname as defence against enemy mages.
Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! Today I want to talk about fluff! Tell us, what are some ways to show affection in your world(s)? Do kisses exist and, if they do, mean anything else? What about *gasp* h u g s? (tag @fields-of-ink)
Oh, hugs are definitely up there in most provinces of the Diamond Empire. The major exception is the Orchid Court in the capital city of Ridimi, open affection is generally frowned upon among the Emperor/Empress’s wives and husbands as they’re supposed to remain faithful, an attitude that’s spread to become noble fashion. In practice 99% of the children produced from this harem have no biological ties to the ruler, but are still considered potential heirs as long as the mother is a wife to the Emperor/Empress.
Emic’s mother, Vasilia, the current Empress, is probably not the biological daughter of the Emperor before her, but she doesn’t know for certain. However, Emic is Vasilia’s biological daughter, but since she was born before Vasilia took the throne, Emic has no claim to be considered as one of the competing heirs.
So nobility tend not to show public affection even outside the capital because Royal Trendsetters.
Which means that when Coriander (noble) discovers Mare (rich family for a fishing village) is very openly affectionate, not because of cultural differences, but because of her Tragic Backstory/military experience (people die, hug them while they’re there), he is baffled and mildly terrified.
Kisses are more taboo than in this world and not exactly romantic. They’re more a form of farewell, symbolising sharing breath/life until next meeting. It’s a statement of ‘I don’t want you to die and I’m going to do my best not to die either.’ They tend to be kept to contexts where there’s a danger of death and thus the taboo.
