While I’m still a cinephile, professionally I’ve been running a gallery in Memphis for the last 7 years, so I’m not the ideal person to ask about the state of the movie business at this exact moment.
Generally though, I would say don’t do it alone. Find people where you are with the same love for film and collaborate and make things and make connections together. And be ready for your break because for those who love movies, your break will come, because that can’t be faked, and people who spot that will give you a break. Be ready to move fast, and throw your whole self into it.
