Deet wants to be friends with everyone and everything. She loves her home in the caves, but she is filled with wonder at being on the surface and honesty her most uttered line is probably, “It’s beautiful!”, along with, “I’m Deet!” because when I say she will try to make friends with anyone I mean it, including a giant spider, an exiled Gelfling everyone thought was a murderer, and an outcast Skeksis. She doesn’t understand class prejudice, or care to understand it. Everyone she’s met has started off with the potential to be her friend. She’s honest and genuine and precious and I will love her forever. But also at the same time she’s not a pushover, and can be very determined. She’s just a sweetheart.

But you also have Brea and Rian, who are pretty great too, because, like, they could be jerks, they both have very high ranking, important positions (princess and castle guard), but they’re not???

Like, Brea’s a princess and when she gets sent to the Order of Lesser Service there’s a girl there who keeps talking to her, like, constantly, and it’s kind of rude some of the things she says, but when Brea talks to her she does it as if this girl is an equal and also not being incredibly annoying. She asks the girl’s name and then says something like, “It’s very nice to meet you.” very firmly and decisively, like she knows that this girl probably doesn’t get told that a lot, when most people would have just told the girl to shut up. Also Brea was the one who figured out all the Gelfling clans are meant to be equal, and that one being higher/more important than another was wrong and stupid. She’s not wandering around the forest/desert complaining about things either, like most princesses would, she’s just trying to get stuff done and save the world.

And Rian, jeeze, this kid. He’s running away from the Castle of the Crystal as an outlaw and he stops to help a family with their overturned cart, and then wishes them well when they realize who he is and tell him forcefully to leave. He’s the only member of the Stone in the Wood clan who is nice to Deet when he meets her, and who treats her like an equal. When he wanders into the Podling village to get out of the rain he’s nice to them too- he talks to them, thanks the one for buying him a drink, and from what we see most of the other Gelfling tend to treat Podlings as second class citizens. (He does pick on the ones in the castle at the beginning, but I don’t think that has anything to do with their race, I think he would have been willing to mess with anyone he could get away with.)
