(real talk, it sucks that Corruption was just played off for Shadow Generations. I would've loved to know more about it, and it's strange that it was for some levels as well as Mephiles' boss fight, considering he was made noncanon.
((Yeah. With a name like "Corruption," you think it would, y'know, corrupt things instead of being a substance on terrain that slows you down when Shadow is normal.))

he's one of the most important people in Sonic's life, so narratively it stings more for him to die
he's a little boy who'd probably have a harder time than, say, Knuckles or Amy to be able to defend himself immediately without any kinda preparation against The Horrors
If allowed to live, he's (usually) smart enough to stop the problem very quickly
