Holly had spent a while leveling out a patch of dirt. A tedious task, which took longer than one might think, and sheâd hated every minute of it. But it would make the rest of her project much easier in the long run. Tossing the shovel aside, she began stacking her cinder blocks.
Gathering them from down near the lack had turned into a fiasco, and her stomach still turned when she thought about it. She wanted to drink. Drown those memories away, but sheâd gotten rid of everything in the house. And she almost had two months without taking even a sip. It was nothing, and if she told anyone theyâd likely have a good laugh, but it was an achievement. Sheâd gone six months earlier in the year, before the trouble with the raiders. Then the shit with the pasty faced puke had pushed her over the edge.Â
The anger and shame she felt over the whole thing was overwhelming, and she did not know how to get shed of it. All she knew is that if she started drinking again, this time, she might not stop.
Footsteps behind her drew her attention for a moment, and she turned to see Matty approaching, and the dogs all running to greet him.
âHey,â Matty spoke over the excited yips and whines from the dogs, âHeard you met a Gunner today.â
She half turned, and gave a nod.
âYou alright?â
âIâm fine. He didnât do nothinâ but run his damn mouth,â she scoffed, unable to bring herself to tell him the kind of shit heâd said. The implications. It made her skin crawl, and it would only piss him off, âAlready talked to Betty about it. Sheâs dealt with him before.â
âHe been a problem?â
âNot that Iâm aware. Besides being a fuckinâ pig, anyhow,â Holly shook her head, âWeâre puttinâ more folks on patrol, Keepinâ a close eye on things just in case.â
Matty nodded, and took a seat on a nearby stump, âYou sure got shit luck with assholes, donât you?â a pause, while he rubbed his face, âSpeakinâ of...found out a little âbout the other shithead.â
Holly stopped, and turned to face him squarely, âYeah?â
âNot a helluva lot, sorry to say,â he let out a breath. Duke rested his head on Matthewâs thigh; a request for ear scratches, which Matthew was happy to give, ââParently heâs part of a group that calls themselves The Saints. They all wear purple, so you know who theyâre with, I guess. Theyâre fairly new to these parts from what Iâve gathered, just gettinâ set up. Fella givinâ you trouble does go by Boss.â
She rolled her eyes, and made a sound in the back of her throat and grumbled, âStupid fuckinâ name.â
Matty chuckled, and nodded, âGotta agree with you there.â
âYou know where theyâre holed up?â
âNot for sure. Nobody I talked to knew much on that account. Best guess, somewhere not too far from Diamond City, but thereâs a whole lotta places they could be, Iâll have to do some more pokinâ around,â he shook his head, âBut, from what I gather, theyâre havinâ a pissinâ match with local raiders and Gunners in the area, so gettinâ in to look around ainât gonna be easy.â
Fear flickered across Hollyâs features, and her stomach did a quick twist. Even without the raiders and Gunners, it would have been hard to do much recon without getting shot, but with all of that going on too? Holly swallowed against a knot in her throat. After everything else, everyone sheâd already had to bury, she could not bear the thought of having to dig a grave for Matty too.
âDonât...â her voice broke, and a brief moment passed before she was able to continue, âD-Donât go pokinâ too much. That little pukeâs off his damn rocker.â
He studied her for a moment, face solemn, and then shook his head, âAinât gonna set to it just yet, but Iâll be careful when I do. I promise. I reckon if he was gonna tryân come at you again right away, heâd woulda done it by now. Weâll keep the Shepherdâs around for a while longer, if theyâre willinâ. Once youâre ready to go out scavvinâ again, Starling says sheâll go out with you. Grant and Slim too. Reckon you got plenty-a folks whoâd be willinâ to go with you.â
âThatâs a while off,â she said quietly, now turning back to the cinder blocks. Holly lifted another, and placed in line next to the last one, taking care to butt them right up against each other, âIâm tired, Matty.â
âI know,â he spoke gently, There was no condescension in his tone, only sadness, âYou been walkinâ a rough road for good long while. Ainât no shame in takinâ a breather.â
Holly did not answer, and instead studied her assortment of blocks. It was not going to be enough, not just yet Sheâd need two rows stacked up at least. Three would be better, to get a nice bed of coals going. Two that sheâd dug up earlier were broken, and might not end up working. They could be used for something else, but probably not for this. Holly let out a long sigh, and grabbed one of the blocks that was whole.
Duke had settled in the grass for a nap, and Matthew stood, and coming closer to look at her project, âWhatcha workinâ on here?â
âSmokehouse,â she nudged the cinder block into place with her foot, âLike the one we had back home.â
âGotta good start on it,â he smiled, âBe nice to have some smoke meat over the winter. You want a hand?â
âNah, Iâm alright. Might get you to help later though...when Iâm doinâ the walls. You was always better with a hammerân nails than me.â
âSure, be glad to,â Matthew looked up at the darkening sky, âIâll go get some supper goinâ while you finish up.â

Matthew glanced at Holly, who was sitting beside him doing her best to drink a bowl of broth. For most it would be a simple task, but anything that required use of her throat proved difficult. She was beginning to have an easier time talking, but doing so at length was a strain. Her responses to his questions were either one word or short choppy sentences. Sheâd managed to tell him only a little of what had happened; that she knew the man whoâd done this to her, and that heâd likely try it again.Â
âAinât sure just yet,â he admitted, brows furrowed in concern, âTalkinâ too much pains her some, âcause of her throat, so I ainât got a full story or nothinâ. Got the impression that this ainât a one time thing,â Matthew paused, rubbing his eyes , âHelp would be âpreciated down the road I think, if youâre serious.â
âMan, I donât know who you are, but your timingâs impeccable.â
[Prompt]
âNameâs Levi,â he said with a smile, leaning opposite the women as bullets rained in their general direction. âLooks like I showed up just in time for all the fun.â
âHell if I know,â came the reply as he studied the pile in front of them. The stench was nearly overwhelming, and Kennedy was grateful his nose and mouth were covered. If they were lucky, whatever had left the remains was long gone, but the mercenary wasnât about to count on luck.
âCould be mutants, maybe some fucked up raiders,â he started, taking another sweep of the room. âKeep your eyes peeled. Donât want to get caught with our ass hanging out in a place like this.â
âDonât figure anyone really does,â he countered with one brow raised her way. Regardless, he stuck a few extra stimpaks and bandages in his bag. âDoesnât mean the world wonât still fuck you for not being prepared.â

âKind of the point, but Iâll kiss it better later,â he murmured against her neck, backing her up further into the room until she was against the bed.
What do you mean you have a bad idea? No, youâre supposed to have good ideas. (Sam)
[Prompt]
âNo, no -- I have ideas,â he insisted, continuing to string the grenades and mines together as they made their way out of the building. The resulting explosion was going to be phenomenal, and Baptiste was disappointed that they wouldnât be able to hang around to watch the destruction first hand.
However, the sheer amount of cannibalistic raiders that they had stumbled upon in the parking garage was something even the Boomer in him didnât want to face again. Better to let the explosions do the work from a safe distance.
âThis will do the trick, but it will be bad for everyone within demolition distance.â
