July 1, 2023 - Black-backed Puffback (Dryoscopus cubla) Found in parts of southern and eastern Africa, these puffbacks live in savannas and forests, often near rivers and coasts. Foraging alone, in pairs, and in mixed-species flocks, they feed on insects and other invertebrates, as well as small lizards, fruit, and buds. Males puff their white back feathers into a ball while performing territorial and courtship displays. Females build the nests alone, though males occasionally bring them materials. The deep cup-shaped nests are built from dry grass, roots, bark strips, spiderwebs, plant down, and sometimes lichen and leaves in trees. Females incubate clutches of two to four eggs while males bring them food and sometimes incubate for short periods. Both parents feed the chicks, though females feed them initially with food gathered by males.
