#protect alpha

To change the color of line art that’s already been drawn, you can enable Protect Alpha which will make it so that you only color on the lines of that layer! 

Don’t forget to turn this feature off when you’re finished so that you can draw elsewhere on your canvas.

Protect Alpha makes it so that you only color on a certain area of your canvas that has been painted. Take a cat for example. If you paint a cat on one layer, add Protect Alpha and then use your brush to color, it will only color on the cat (on that layer) and nowhere else.

Hello! There are different methods! Here are a few:

Clipping | Protect Alpha | Selection

Make sure you have a canvas (File > New), make sure you are on a visible, unlocked layer, without protect alpha checked, and make sure you are using a brush set to full opacity and not the same color as your back ground.

Protect Alpha only allows you to draw on what is already on the layer. Use the magic wand, selection tools, or the dye bucket to stay inside the lines (note: you may have to expand the pixels at the top to cover all the white areas). Alternately, you can use a brush and carelessly color where you want. Select the layer with the lineart on it, with a selection tool select the area outside the lines, go back to the layer you colored on and press delete (or erase everything in the selection area).

Yup, on that layer, check Protect Alpha. This will allow you to color over what is already on the layer (note: this will not work if your lineart has a background on the same layer).

The X will only disappear when the point of your cursor is directly above the existing linework pixels, when painting will work.

You can still “paint” invisibly on the canvas, and whenever you cross the linework your new colour will replace the linework colour. You can make your brush size larger - even if the cursor is showing an X, as long as the linework is within the paint area of the brush it will get re-coloured.

If you want to re-colour all the linework to a single new colour, a quick way is to select the Fill (shape) tool (not the Bucket tool) and drag a rectangle around your linework.
