So my first child apparently never latched properly during the first three months of breast feeding…and it didn’t go well. From any exterior observation even the lactation specialist at the hospital said we were doing fine. But after three months of excruciating pain I made it a point to do some more research. He was only using the front of his mouth instead of getting the whole nipple and areola adjusted to fit where it was supposed to so it was bad on both fronts. He wasn’t getting enough milk feeding like this, hence why he was always hungry, and he wasn’t in a position that made it painless for me. It would rub my nipple against his tongue which resulted in feeling like someone was rubbing me with a rough washcloth for 15mins ever other hour…not a pleasant time. A good latch has the nipple positioned just at the soft pallet so the tongue rubs against the less sensitive skin of the areola during the sucking motion of the mouth and the nipple squirts the milk down the throat. There are a few techniques that help baby get a proper mouthfull of breast to achieve this proper latching, and I was able to find one that worked for us. He didn’t eat much longer past this but, boy did it make a world of a difference. He hate faster and was satiated much longer between feedings and I was in far less pain. (Let Down still cramped like hell and idk if that’s going to be another issue this time around but we’ll see). I’m really interested if this time around baby will have those wonderful chipmunk cheeks like their cousins. I’m already producing copious amounts of colostrum so my actual milk production should soar when the time comes. With lots of available food and a proper latch I know how to look for and help achieve I hope our little bundle gets plenty enough to eat and those adorable features to go along with it. 🥰
