"Why'd you go? I get needing to rest, but... I thought you were dead, then you weren't but you just... you left, without thinkin' to say goodbye, and—" He's holding onto Lovecraft's jacket, eyes focused on his tie instead of on his eyes. "Did you even want to come back? Or did I just want..." It's one of those days when his humanity gets the best of him, and he's overwhelmed by his emotions and self-doubts. Maybe it's cruel to hold him here like this, with a goal he never had stake in.
“I…” A reasonable facsimile of human concern crosses his features as he looks down at Steinbeck—clinging to him, caught in the grips of his own emotional intensity. “I realize how my actions must have looked to you.” Selfish. Uncaring. In the past, Lovecraft wouldn’t have been bothered by such things. For him, the span of a human life could pass in an instant, so why would he mind how a single man felt about his departure?
“For all the power I have, even I am ruled by forces beyond my control. When I am no longer contracted, I return to the depths, and I sleep.” He wants to reach out to Steinbeck in turn, but can’t bring himself to do it, considering what he’s saying. “Until a particular time arrives, I cannot walk this earth freely. Such is the way of things, for the protection of creatures like you. What I want has nothing to do with it.”
He’s not bitter about this arrangement. It can’t be helped. If anything, he’s resigned to it, no matter how tragic it must sound.
“…But you, John Steinbeck, are one of the only things I treasure in this world. For you, I would return one time, or one hundred times, so long as you wished me to be by your side.”

“---S-Steinbeck?” Oh, good, he’s alive! That’s....that’s good. But also vaguely terrifying, thanks, he’s not sure if anyone knows who leaked the Moby Dick’s weaknesses and he isn’t sure if that’s going to be a problem or if it’s not a problem or what the other man is up to and he should be trying to puzzle that out, right, especially if the Agency is in trouble because he doesn’t want to pick sides and--- okay, maybe he needs to breathe first. “....hello?”
propagates replied to your post: it should probably be clear from the lack of...

As if the child would have been safe after such an ordeal-- Kyuusaku had not known a moment of safety for almost seven years of their life. Even if they had been rescued from the Guild, the place that they had returned to was no better.
Of course, they kept a wide smile on their face! It was important, wasn’t it? There was nothing wrong with this picture in the slightest! For the life of them, they could not keep still-- It took all of their self control to limit themself to the careful rocking on and off the balls of their feet. ( To approach in this moment would be dangerous if they didn’t act! They wanted to have their fun first. )
... Was that regret in his voice? As if an apology and regrets would mean much of anything to a child who had been hurt countless times. This fact only causes their grin to widen. “Aw, really? How kind of you, mister!” Their voice was sweet as they spoke. Sickeningly so.
“Why do you seem so sad, though?~” Their head tilts to the side as they voice the question. They truly don’t understand. “Don’t tell me! You think I’ll forgive you if you feel bad about what happened!”
so i know you've mentioned to me before lovecraft needing (not just wanting) those breaks/naps in the ocean, but maybe expand on that more? as well as anything surrounding that, i guess!!
meta prompts.
as much as lovecraft himself might call it a need, it’s at least partially psychosomatic. when he’s on land, it often isn’t for long–his stint with the guild was easily one of his longest, purely because what he was contracted for couldn’t be accomplished quickly–so the longer he is there, the more trapped he tends to feel. that’s obviously stressful, and that combined with whatever else he’s dealing with is understandably detrimental to his ‘health’ (psychologically, physically, or otherwise).
the other, more realistic, part of this problem is that he’s intended to live underwater. he’s fine breathing air and walking around, of course, so the situation is livable, he’s not about to die or anything, it’s just bothersome and uncomfortable about 90% of the time. it’s equivalent to giving someone some scuba gear and whatever else they need to live, throwing them in the ocean, and going “this is fine! you’ll be staying here for a few years!” and just leaving them there. it’s not. great.
