The California Prop 65 Regulation is an act passed in favor of safe drinking water and toxic effects. It requires businesses in California to give official warnings to the residents living in the state about any chemical exposure that can lead to birth defects, cancer, reproductive problems and such things. The said chemical exposure can be in the forms of products, in work environments, at homes or just in the atmosphere of the state. The act is directed towards making Californians known about any chemical threats that may affect them and enabling them to take a decision based on the information they have.

The Forbidden Chemicals
The government of California has a published list of toxic chemicals in relation to the Prop65 regulation. These chemicals are medically known to cause cancer, birth defects and reproductive toxicity. The list is updated every year. The number of chemicals keep growing with each year. Clear Warnings
Some business owners are not quite clear about the warning part. What is officially considered a warning? What kind of a warning does it have to be? There are some terms that apply to this that make things a little clearer.
First, a business needs to inform the person or people concerned prior to the exposure. You are to warn the people under the Prop65 act when the exposure has been intentional.
A warning has to be issued when the chemical released is on the list of forbidden chemicals. In addition to that, the warning issued should be done in a simple and understandable language, in other words, it should be “clear and reasonable”.
Prohibitions
Providers of Prop65 compliance services also stress on the prohibitions of this act. One of the key prohibitions of this regulation is discharges in drinking water. A company must not knowingly let any of the listed chemicals into a source of drinking water. The same applies for land where it may seep through and reach the water table down below.
Exemptions
The act of Prop65 also has some exemptions. For example, the act does not apply to federal agencies, state agencies or the local government agencies. Other organizations exempt from this regulation are entities in charge of public water systems in California. The exemption also includes businesses that have nine employees or fewer in conditions where there the exposure poses no cancer risk or reproductive effects.

Here’s some relevant news if you live in #California. #Prop65 was a proposition passed in 1986 (63% for 37% against). It stats that if places have products which contain even trace amounts of cancer-causing chemicals, it has to notify the public. This has been controversial because #acrylamide, which is found when heating carbs or roasting coffee beans, causing #cancer in high amounts in lab animals BUT coffee has been shown to be anti-carcinogenic.
