STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES - 1968 NOVEL 'THE MISSION TO HORATIUS'' BY MACK REYNOLDS
In 1968, when I was 14; my younger brother and I moved from living with my grandparents in South Dakota, to living in California with my mother and her fifth husband.
My grandparents flew with us out to California (they were continuing on to Hawaii for a vacation). We stopped on the way to the airport at a drug store, to pick up last minute items, and I wandered over to the book section ... and saw the first Star Trek novel ever publishes, 'The Mission to Horatius,' by Mack Reynolds.
Of course, I purchased it, and read it on the plane out to California. The novel borrowed the characters and the basic theme of Star Trek, but it was obvious the author had never seen the series.
I still have the novel, although I haven't re-read it in some time.
UPDATE - gosh golly, I just found a video on You Tube discussing this novel.
