أكدت شركة مايكروسوفت جدوى تخزين البيانات في قاع البحر، وذلك بعد أن اختتمت عملاقة البرمجيات تجربة استمرت لسنوات تضمنت استخدام مركز بيانات تحت الماء بحجم حاوية الشحن، تم وضعه في قاع البحر قبالة سواحل جزيرة أوركني في إسكتلندا.
وكانت مايكروسوفت قد أغرقت في عام 2018 مركز للبيانات كاملًا في قاع البحر الإسكتلندي، حيث أغرقت 864 خادمًا و 27.6 بيتابايت من التخزين على عمق 117 قدمًا في المحيط.
