Half Life salio a la venta el 8 de noviembre de 1998 y se encuentra a punto de cumplir 20 años y a pesar de ser un videojuego que ya tiene sus años, continúa maravillando a varios por su guion y diseño de juego. También han llegado algunos mods para darle nueva vida al juego y que este se ajuste a los estándares actuales, sin embargo, siempre hay personas que van más allá.
Project Lambda es un proyecto que intenta darle una vida nueva a este gran videojuego con el motor gráfico Unreal Engine y el resultado es simplemente excelente, cabe señalar que este no es una adaptación del original, es más bien una reconstrucción, de momento el primer capítulo ya se encuentra listo para jugar y descargar y comentan que lo más probable es que en un tiempo comiencen el desarrollo del segundo capítulo del juego.

Here's another talk by Brian Goetz at this year's JavaOne, this time about the technical details of lambdas in Java (as the title also suggests). Goetz explains why and how invokedynamic (indy - as they apparently call it at Oracle) is just the perfect match to deal with lambdas in the jvm: it's the best instrument for being able to divorce the language construct and the binary representation, so that it's not pinned down till the end of times.
After the link you can find a presentation by Brian Goetz (Java language architect at Oracle and one of the leaders of Project Lambda), which he did three weeks ago at JavaOne on Project Lambda. It covers a lot of details of how lambdas will work in Java, e.g. syntax, functional interfaces, collection stream abstraction and lazy collections, bulk operations on collections like foreach, map, filter etc., default extension methods, paralellism etc. Let me share two slides I've screenshot from the presentation:
This is a parallel sum operation over a collection, implemented using the fork/join framework. Don't worry if you can't read it, the main thing here is that the red lines are the actual logic of summing (=what we want to do), and black lines are boilerplate related to fork/join (=technical details of how we're doing it). The next slide shows the same, but implemented using the parallel collection streams of Project Lambda:
And In the heart of all this is the parallel counterpart of Iterator, the Spliterator!
I have already mentioned Project Lambda earlier, when posted a comparison of Scala and upcoming Java lambda expressions. But this, quite old but still great article here explains why it takes so long to introduce lambdas and closures to the Java language, and what kind of challenges one must face along the way. Also it presents multiple proposals for this language feature. For those interested, I would also recommend to read Lambdas in Java: An In-Depth Analysis on InfoQ from 2010, which is more like a much shorter summary of the same topic, without the story and a lot of details.
