I think the #1 sign you have spent too much time on this site is when you can just like, come up with your own discourse that you wouldn’t agree with but you 100% would expect to see, somewhere, on Tumblr. One example is the way that the “he sleeps around but it’s bad for him” or “you think he sleeps around but turns out it’s a ruse! he actually just loves one woman” arc for male characters, that seems like some (shallow) attempt at a feminist corrective to how we lionize womanizers.... is probably being interpreted by some doofus on this site at any moment as “arophobic.” I usually think of this in terms of like, Don Draper’s arc in Mad Men. But I recently finished the second Hunger Games book and there’s that whole thing with Finnick where you think he’s willingly and happily sleeping with half of the Capitol and you later learn not only is that not his choice, but he actually loves one girl back in District 4. Like, there’s gotta be someone on here writing some “meta” about how this is “sex-shaming” and/or “arophobic” right?
And yet I go back and get frustrated because that subplot should be critiqued, in a different way. There’s an obnoxious trend in dystopian YA that The Hunger Games made worse but definitely did not invent (you can see this in stuff like The Giver as well) of creating a system where your boring white heterosexual romance is now “countercultural” and you’re “rebelling” by falling in love with other boring white straight people. You now see books that are fully about this, where the entire dystopia is basically "the government assigned you the WRONG white straight person to mate with but you love another white straight person!” (This is also a reminder of why all those self-aggrandizing posts about wanting “critical” soulmate AUs because “it’s a broken system” are so silly. Your “edgy, critical” fanfiction is identical to the premises of multiple bad YA series! There’s nothing groundbreaking about it.) But there’s definitely a thread that you can link back to earlier examples where it’s just one example of how oppressive this government is, where they make it hard even for innocent pure white straights to marry who they want! Meanwhile, there are no explicitly gay characters and certainly no gay relationships in your world; you’re capitalizing on the pain we experience while erasing us from your world. The Hunger Games at least has non-white people in it, I guess; lots of other examples of this trend do not.
....And then I bet someone is going to respond to this rant accusing me of “ableism” for calling Finnick and Annie a “boring white straight couple” when they both have PTSD. That’s how predictable the discourse on this site is. My response would be: sure, but I think that’s kinda just disguising how rote and predictable this is. The books/films could’ve also made her non-white, or a boy, or something. And you know what, I’m allowed to be extra frustrated by this in The Hunger Games, both with how it treats supporting couples but also eventually the main couple, when so much of it is devoted to how the obsessive media focus on heterosexual-romance-over-all-else also distracts us from real problems, and is a form of bread and circus. And yet it plays right into it. :(

white gays taking over!! when was the last time you saw a superhero film or summer blockbuster that WASN'T about a white gay protagonist? so many choices
Things I am tired of:
Being told that I have to ship m/f ships or else I secretly hate myself. Maybe I just hate the way Hollywood writes het romance, okay?

Abt the "Victor is an idiot" headcanons: i feel like a lot of ppl are obsessed with the Idea of one half of their ship being the "stick in the mud intelectual humorless type" and the other half being "the goofy silly human disaster type" so his forgetfulness is played up so that he can fit this Second category. The "yuuri doesn't like pda" trope also feeds from this imo
Yeah I agree. I feel like there’s a lot you could unpack about why people on this site are so into that specific relationship dynamic, but I have a class in 15 minutes and I’ve spent too much time today on Tumblr anyway
I will say that as obnoxious as it is in slash, it’s nowhere near as annoying as the way people talk about it in het. It’s a common “proghet” argument that I’ve seen across so many fandoms that “my het ship is FEMINIST because the WOMAN runs the relationship and has to watch over the dude who can barely tie his shoes lol” where I’m just like… have you never watched a detergent commercial. Have you never even read this Tumblr post? Well, I’m about to blow your mind here but… telling women they need to expend a lot of effort on, essentially, babysitting men is not the feminist progressive message that you think it is, nor is it a particularly new idea in any way.
The most “sips tea” shit on this site is watching people squabble over which of two extremely predictable and boilerplate het ships is the “more progressive,” “more feminist,” etc.
*flips thru my rolodex* hmmm we got internalized misogyny, external misogyny, cisphobia, whitecock dickfencing… dave? dave, get me the bad feminist file.
