Profundo Rosso — Goblin
Whether you love or hate Dario Argento, you have to admit that many of his films have the most beautiful sets. It is through decoration that he often tells a story underneath murder, madness, and malicious magic.
I mean, look at this:
Suspiria (1977) is a great example of the complex and intricate set design. These rooms stand out more than the characters. Susie Bannon is overwhelmed by a world of evil, but it is also the beauty of the interiors that hide the evil underneath.
Similarly, Deep Red (1975) has a theatricality, a severity, and opulence to demonstrate the truth behind the murders and also hints to a pattern: the secret of the murders exists in the past and in the decorations. It is literally the realization about the décor -- or lack of it -- that reveals the truth about the killer’s identity.
