"I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" is a song written and performed by Scottish duo The Proclaimers, and first released as the lead single from their album Sunshine on LeithΒ (1988), where it enjoyed some modest success in the United Kingdom and Australia.
Later in 1993, it was included as one of the main themes of the 1993 American romantic comedy film Benny & Joon starring Johnny Depp and Mary Stuart Masterson; subsequently, "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" powered onto the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for most of that year, eventually climbing as high as #3.
The song was mainly written by Craig Reid (with some help from his brother Charlie) in the summer of 1987 while waiting to travel to a Hibernian Football Club match in Aberdeen. The Reids have said that The Proclaimers earnings from the song are about five times the rest of their catalog combined.
