i think most fairy tales are problematic. my favorite is disney’s beauty and the beast, and that’s a lot of straight up kidnapping. and honestly, i think it’s a constant conversation i have with myself and other fairy tale lovers. a lot of fairy tales aren’t great, and a lot of fairy tales i know and love are strictly western tales. that’s a blind spot. 

i mostly love the bones of fairy tales and how i can reimagine them or see other people reimagine them. but i can’t forget how they started and how “yikes” they are. honestly, it’s a lot of personal conversations and contextualizing. not context in the way of forgiveness, but in the way of “how is this story still relevant to my personal life and journey?” for me, it’s a matter of making sure i don’t forgive something just because i love it or i grew up with it. i won’t ever argue with someone who finds fairy tales or disney reductive or harmful. they’re not wrong. i think disney and fairy tales did some serious damage to our culture, and probably to myself if i’m being honest.

so... the answer is that i haven’t reconciled it and i don’t think i ever will. it’s something i think about a lot. for my own retellings and reimaginings, i’m always thinking about how i can transform the story into something powerful to myself. i love fairy tales for the exact same reason i love horror movies- there’s a girl who survives horrible things and comes out the other side stronger. but not everyone sees that when they watch a horror movie, or when they read a fairy tale.

combat boots: are you a very forgiving person? do you like being this way?-LMAO yes, I am. I like it that I don’t keep grudges (bad for the skin and for the soul), but I let people in my life get away with more than they should

I’ve had this happen to me. It was hard bc while I recognized that I was in the wrong, I still ended up feeling annoyed and pissed that they couldn’t tell me in a straightforward, honest way without blowing up.
