May we investigate the desk? If the writer was dead before the axe wound, yet there are no other physicial wounds. If there is an avenue for poison, such as food or drink, Blue: this would suggest the writer was killed by poisoning.
On the desk there is a very grim diary that belongs to the writer. He feared for his life and wrote down everything he had drank and eaten in the last 24 hours. This would effectively suggest the killer used poison against him! DING DING DING!

I don't believe anyone's investigated so far? Is it possible for us to get a visual of the room? Such as the objects and furniture? Also, is it possible to get an estimated time of death? In addition, the cause of death? After all, we have a detective~
This is the room as it is right now! The time of deaths are estimated to be between 1 and 3 in the morning. In the wife's case, she is completely unharmed besides her sliced throat. The same can be said about the writer, but upon closed inspection you realize that the wound was made after the writer had already died.
