The Slow-Seeming Snapping Turtle
The Slow-Seeming SnappingĀ Turtle
Photo by Radovan Zierik on Pexels.com The Slow-Seeming Snapping Turtle (Donāt Judge a Book by its Cover Story) One find summer day, driving down the long curved driveway of IBM Research in Yorktown, I noticed a manhole-sized snapping turtle in the middle of the driveway. I pulled the car over. I didnāt want someone running into the reptile, looking as he did, such a splendid livingā¦

Concept: Serial Position Effect
The Serial position effect comprises of two effects that affect recall. Woah. Letās break this down.Ā
Recall: The ability to accurately pull information from long term memory.Ā
Primacy effect: The tendency to remember an item or a fact that has been presented earlier than others. (i.e; first item on a list or a first impression)
Recency effect: The tendency to remember an item or a fact that has been presented most recently than others. (i.e; last item on a list or last commercial you saw).
Serial Position Effect: The tendency for the recall of an item in a series to be dependent on the position of that item in the series. Translation: The tendency for the first and last thing on a list to be remembered easier while everything in the middle gets fucked.Ā
Murdock (1962) Experiment - Captured the Primacy and recency effect by giving participants lists of words to read and tested their recall of that list. He found that the position of a word on the list changed the probability of its recall thus making the serial position effect a scientific theory. In his conclusion Murdock theorized that the reason the Primacy effect occurs is because the observer has enough time to rehearse the word to move it from short term memory to Long term memory. The recency effect occurs because the observer has enough time to store the item in short term memory.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Interesting. Although you might probably have guessedĀ āwell thatās common senseā ( the feeling attributed to affirmation bias), lets take a moment to appreciate the genius of differentiating how these two effects, although similar, come from two different memory stores. Ok. appreciation over. lets fast-forward to
Glanzer and Cunitz (1966) Experiment - To test whether rehearsal was key in these two effects, these sadists presented two groups the same list of words. One group was made to recall the list right after while the other group was made to wait 30-seconds while counting backwards in threes. The reverse countdown technique was used to effectively prevent rehearsal. Furthermore the 30-second wait was used to also limit short-term memory. So when the results came in that the recency effect was completely demolished in the second group it was affirmed that rehearsal played a major role in both the Primacy and Recency effect. Ā

Compilation 2.5 and some uncovered Primacy Effect demos
So this evening we dropped the second half of the PRR spring compilation, featuring contributions from stalwarts Tyler (Cloud), Samira (Winter), Greg (Sonoak), mixer extraordinaire Cole (Raw Paws), Jon (Fjords/Cloud) and myself (Brendan, Marblemouth, how do you do?). There's also some really good selections from Ty's cousin Dylan (Safehouse) as well as some guys who I don't believe I've had the pleasure of meeting.
That's all availableĀ here.
Closing this carefully constructed mix areĀ Primacy Effect, aka Tyler, Samira, and Lorena in the dream pop project they started in our dorm rooms at Emerson College. Looking back, it feels like a really special time that was probably pretty normal. Samira and Lorena hosted a dorm show that October where the people who would end up comprising the Boston wing of PRR all played together for the first time.
That was also around the time that I started to fuck around with a digital recorder I'd received as a gift. I took footage of a Primacy Effect practice session...or maybe a show...I'm not sure. At the risk of overloading you with too much music in one night, you can download the audio I took from mediafire by clicking the image below, the only photo of TSL that I could find.
Primacy Effect would eventually go the way of their heroes, Galaxie 500, but live on through their handful of EPs, and a bitchin' cover of "She Did A Lot of Acid" by Neutral Milk Hotel (more on that soon).
