Melbourne Victory supporter group boycott Pride Cup
Melbourne Victory head coach, Arthur Diles, has put his foot down following the boycott of the clubâs Pride Cup match against Adelaide United by one group of fans.
Diles reaffirmed the clubâs commitment to inclusion, stating that the Pride Cup match against Adelaide United ârepresents what football is aboutâ.
Victory supporters criticise âdisgustingâ actions
Victory and Adelaide faced off in an exciting A-League Women/A-League Men doubleheader on Saturday as part of the Pride Cup initiative, which aims to make the sport more welcoming for the LGBTQIA+ community.
However, members of Victoryâs North Terrace active supporter group boycotted the match, instead choosing to attend the clubâs National Premier League game in Shepparton.
The group brought with them North Terrace banners saying âno politicsâ and âno more gimmicksâ in an apparent protest against the pride match.
The display was met with criticism from other Victory supporters. âAs a Victory member this is utterly disgusting and unless we issue a statement against the NTâs actions I donât see myself attending another game this season,â wrote one.
âThey donât represent my club,â another added.

Despite the groupsâ boycott, a strong contingent of active fans turned out for the two games.
Diles said he didnât notice the absence of those who stayed away. âI didnât really notice it because we still had big numbers behind both ends of the goals,â he said.
âIn the end, itâs a pride round, and itâs a game that represents what football is about â and itâs for everybody.â
Pride round about âloveâ and âinclusionâ
Before the game, Melbourne Victory striker, Emily Gielnik, reflected on what the Pride celebrations mean to her.
âPride Round means to me everyone coming together, inclusivity and ultimately its about love,â she said.
Gielnick, who has long been open about her sexuality, married her longtime partner Temica Sayer in 2023.
