Im Gegenteil: Sie geht gerade erst los – und zwar mit einem ordentlichen ersten 1:0 für Aktivist_innen und viele andere Rassismus-sensible Personen.
yay! 1:0 für uns!
Gegen Gewalt in Sprache, Normalität, Beziehungen, Institutionen!
I have linked to the article pointing out that it is not about censorship, it is more about solidarity. and a big shout to the the accountable father writing letters to the author, thank you!
Interesting, interesting.
Germany is debating in its feuilleton whether it is "censorship" when racist words are now substituted by other words. It started because an accountable father complained by the author Otfried Preußler about the use of racist language in the book (see here). And the author decided that there is time to change the language. Since than the German feuilleton is debating that decision as one of "censorship" instead of researching the persistance of violent/colonial language/images in children books (see the next issue of ZEIT and other media).
It is interesting to see that the debate is constructed and understood as an attack against "us" and "our books" (and our childhood) by "them". Them, the ones outspeaking against daily racism, outspeaking and scandalising the violence of banal racism.
Well I'm not sorry that people feel uncomfortable. Actually to me it is funny and sad at the same time, to see that Germany rehearses again its positionality as innocent white kid which doesn't like to think about its accountability. Well it is much easier and more comfortable to blame the others of censorship. But, this is just narrowing the debate and gets away with the question who has the power to define.
I don't want to share that language which feels cut off and being censored and feels attacked. keep it, don't worry. i don't want to have those snippets of violent language on my screen. i work on my own language in search of justice and accountability. And I wrote "I work on it", language is a process, as annoying it is. And believe me, i am looking out the for the "we" in language.
