“I will do everything I can to secure a flight,” Mr. Edgeworth continues, strained. “But in the meantime, I will reach out to defense attorneys stateside. We’ve a family friend, Raymond Shields. If he’s back from New York, then—“
“I can do it.”
The words leave his mouth before he can stop them. Mr. Edgeworth goes quiet, and he closes his fingers around courage, around the pained sound of Mr. Wright’s voice still ringing in his ears.
“I’ll do it. I can defend him, Mr. Edgeworth.”
“Polly,” Trucy whispers.
“I—I’m ready. I can do this. You know I—" His voice wavers, and unsteadily regains its strength. “You know I’ll do whatever I can to help. And I know he could never—” Mr. Wright could no sooner kill someone than kick a puppy, and even then…if it was self-defense, Apollo will fight for him. Tooth and nail, just like he was taught.
Because Mr. Wright is the one who taught him, and he believes.
it never rains (but it pours), ch. 5 part 2
Chapter Excerpt:
“What are you doing in...” Dr. Blackquill’s voice ebbs as she lifts her glasses. Her gaze locks on Athena, and her eyes widen with disbelief, darting from her face to her neck and back. “You,” she says, in a familiar accent tangled with surprise. Then, in a sharp, sudden instant, her face clears and empties. Her eyes narrow, and her full mouth twitches at a corner. “Well, well. It seems her Royal Highness has at last returned to the castle.” Her eyes and voice share the same shade. Grey, like frozen river water. Widget bleeps anxiously at Athena’s throat, and Phoenix doesn’t need her skills to interpret the emotion coating the doctor’s voice. Loathing. A beat, and he hears Athena’s thick swallow. “... Hello, Aura.”
hi aa fandom. I'm still alive :) 💙❤️
Waugh hello I am. So nervous to be sending this. I know you probably get this a lot but I adore your wrighting (see what I did there) and your pressure verse fic is my favorite piece of literature of all time. including published books. you've been very inspiring to me as a writer and I always tend to look at the way you write dialogue and character interactions when I'm feeling stuck on my own writing and you motivate me to keep going when I feel unsatisfied with what I write. So thank you for being awesome
You have shot me point blank in the chest with this. I am so honored that you like my writing enough to revisit and to reach out. Wow. 😭

The poll has spoken... and therefore, without too much ado, I present chapter five, part one of 'it never rains'. Almost exactly a year after my last installment! And with this, we've broken through the 100k word count! Thanks so much, everyone, for waiting around on me. i hope you enjoy it. <3
chapter excerpt:
“Daddy.” Trucy’s voice comes, worried, from the living room, and Miles watches Phoenix fumble with the gas, muttering curses. “Yeah, sweetie, I’ve got it, nothing’s ruined—” “Daddy, ” Trucy says again, but there’s no relief in it. “Papa. I think you need to see this.” They both frown, glancing at one another. Phoenix shuts off the stove, and they abandon the kitchen for the living room, the sound of a newscast filling Miles’s ears as they draw close. “Truce?” “Daddy,” Trucy says, turning from the TV. Her face is pale, ringing alarm bells in his mind. “Something bad happened downtown. I saw people talking about it online and turned on the news and...” Miles turns to the television, the reporter’s voice increasing as Trucy dials up the volume. A reporter, standing in front of what looks like the GYAXA center downtown, above the headline at the bottom of the screen— TRAGEDY AT COSMOS SPACE CENTER.

Hey there Jazz. I'm such a big fan. Pressure verse remains one of my fave fics ever. I've always been curious about how you portray and see Phoenix. Is it something unique on Pressure verse that Phoenix lies so bad that anyone close to him can read him easily? Versus Canon that many people either have him that he's just good at hiding his thoughts because the game just expresses to players his thoughts? Or he is still the same emotional man but is so awkward and his acting in theater makes him good at pretending? Because he's so evasive about anything himself. Pssst. Any also any hint of next update? Hehehe.
Hi hi!
Wow, so I had to take a second to think about this question. In its DNA, Pressureverse is a 'In Want of a Nail' story - the joke of 'what if Phoenix got therapy post-Dahlia' explored with narrative consequences. As a result, the Phoenix that takes shape over the course of the adjusted plot is one that-- while certainly not smoothed of character flaw or mentally prime lol-- has learned that even if he doesn't believe that his troubles or concerns should be shared (for arrogant or trauma-related reasons), he has learned that he likes and needs the support he receives from other people who take notice. In a way, the joke about his being a bad liar is evidence to progress in his relationships that diverges meaningfully from canon. He's a character that's not capable or willing to ask for help in many ways, but in Pressureverse, at least, he's begun to "telegraph" through chosen lies when he has needs. It's a changed indicator of his mental health, but it's a character flaw I gave him intentionally, because to make Phoenix a "bad liar" was an indirect way of writing the other characters-- particularly female characters-- as BETTER listeners. A lot of characters in Ace Attorney often share one major trait, and that's perception/emotional sensitivity, but only when narratively convenient for a video game sometimes. But in writing, or in Pressure at least, the key relationship is Phoenix and Maya's. Phoenix is a frequent liar who IS capable of lying well, but to people who know him, even when he's not half-assing it, they would learn to pick up on it. Why wouldn't Maya be sensitive over time to who he is, and when he's struggling?
Basically, Phoenix being a "bad liar" is a trait that is altogether a bit, intentional character development/canon divergence, and biased based on the POV character of the chapter. (Ex. Characters like Edgeworth and Klavier wouldn't describe him as a bad liar, but a lot of the other more sensitive characters in his life would!)
Sorry for how lengthy this was! As for an update, I'd cross my fingers for after the holidays... right now, I'm working on a Metal Gear Solid fic ;)
