It’s National Prep Month!

September is National Preparedness Month, a nationwide campaign to promote emergency preparedness and encourage volunteerism. Regardless of the type of emergency, it is important to make sure that you, your family and your community are prepared.

The theme for National Preparedness Month 2018 is "Disasters Happen. Prepare Now. Learn How." Visit our public health emergency website to learn more about available resources and guidance on a variety of potential emergencies. Here you can also find our most current educational video, “Emergency Health Care Preparedness Saves Lives,” which demonstrates how we work with the New York City health care system and city partners to prepare for emergencies.

Preparedness starts with being aware of risks and hazards and taking key steps before a disaster happens. This includes:

Knowing how to respond to specific hazards using threat response guides.

Taking the online bystander training course.

Using The Ready New York guides that offer tips and information designed to help New Yorkers prepare for all types of emergencies. Select the guides that are right for you and share them with you friends, family and neighbors.

Preparing your prescription medications before a disaster or evacuation. See Tips for Prescription Preparedness.

Creating a Personal Health Summary to keep track of your medical information.

Staying connected and informed by registering for Notify NYC to receive alerts about emergency events and important City services.

Keeping a Go Bag, a collection of supplies if you need to shelter in place or evacuate, at home and at work.

September is National Preparedness Month!

Regardless of the type of emergency, it is important to make sure that you, your family, your workplace and your community are prepared. 

Given the recent destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey, we are once again reminded of the lifesaving importance of preparedness. NYC is currently in coastal storm season (August- October), and now is a great time to get prepared. Our thoughts are with all of those affected by the storm.
