Three things Hikers need on a backpacking trip
Backpacking is a great way to enjoy time in nature. Backpacking can be a relatively expensive sport for people to begin to participate in. Tents, backpacks, shoes or boots, and other supplies are pretty cheap when new and even cheaper when bought used. Getting out into nature and away from the stresses of life (and away from the people in general!) Is not only good exercise, but it's good for the soul as well. Watch the sun set or rise from a wilderness location is one of the great moments in life. Sleeping under the stars, listening to the mountain streams cascade through a rocky stream, and fresh air are just some of the wonderful experiences of backpacking. But As with anything, backpackers need to be prepared for what may come up. Here are three things no backpacker should go in the woods without. Apparently, far more than three things are needed, but these are three inexperienced walkers may not think of when planning a trip. The first is a system for water purification. Although boiling water is good for the most part, it is time consuming and not practical in all situations. Large units are small and inexpensive can be purchased that is good in an emergency. Items developed for the Third World are easy and cheap and can provide much needed clean water while you pack it down nicely in a backpack. Remote campsites with broken water, busted or spilled water storage containers and other mishaps can all happen. It could mean the cancellation of a backpacking trip or a return to the car, or it might mean to drink contaminated water that can kill. A simple water treatment system is a must for hikers and backpackers. The second is a signaling device. A small mirror, especially one for this purpose is sufficient and takes up almost no space in a backpack. A broken leg in a remote valley can be death knell for a solo backpacker. Watch a rescue plan to fly over while you lay on the ground waving his arms in a remote location is not a way to spend the weekend. Have a signal mirror in your backpack. The third thing you need is a way to repair your backpack. Duct tape is a good start but is not all that is needed to repair a backpack. Some rolled wire (cable used to image the design is perfect as it is flexible and strong) and a sewing kit is the ideal addition to duct tape for backpackers. The sewing kit should consist of a few needles and some eight pounds or so test fishing line. The rope can be used to sew up the rips in the backpack, and gives a very strong and weather resistant repairs. Duct tape can also be used to secure hiking shoes or boots that fall apart. This is just a beginning for a complete list of backpacking, but do not leave home without these three on your next backpacking or hiking.
