Okay, so I figured out why losing Matthew is so traumatic for Beth. Â It's because Luke died the same way. Â Well, not the same way but ALMOST. Â For Beth, it all comes back to Luke. Â For Ed, it all comes back to Hal. Â That's why both of those deaths need to have a major presence in TYFS. Â Both of them are marked by loss, and to a certain extent, that determines the arc of the novels (as yet regrettably unwritten).
