fine.   the  baby  was  supposed  to  be  just  fine.   the  heartbeat  was  strong.   that’s  what  they  were  told  at  one  of  the  first  appointments.   well,  that’s  what  wendy  had  been  told.   jackson  had  decided  to  skip  it  altogether,  had  more  important  things  to  take  care  of  than  the  unwanted  pregnancy  of  the  woman  he  was  divorcing.   everything  was  supposed  to  be  just  fine…   and  it  was,  up  until  yesterday.   the  anatomy  scan  shown  the  same  congenital  heart  defect  that  claimed  his  little  brother’s  life.   the  family  flaw,  his  mother  calls  it.   and  the  worst  thing  about  it  all?   he  can’t  even  try  and  blame  wendy  for  it.   it’s  not  her  drugs  that  caused  this  but  his  fucked  up  genes.   “kid’s  not  gonna  make  it,  sloane.”   his  hand  reaches  for  hers  and  the mere brush of skin on skin  provides  some  comfort,  ring-clad  fingers  squeezing  hers  a  little  too  hard.   “don’t  think  i’m  ready  for  it.”   he’s  not  ready  to  be  a  father  but  he’s  not  ready  to  let  go  either…   hates  wendy  for  keeping  it,  for  giving  the  kid  a  name.   what  for?   so  they  can  put  it  on  a  headstone?   “maybe  it’s  for  the  best,  though.”
