also my pastor always makes this point about how the Hebrew word that refers to the Holy Spirit is a feminine one and w/ the Trinity thing it’s like. if you’re going to gender God you really can’t do it consistently so why bother?

Yes, exactly. I’ll admit I need to brush up on the reading we did about the Holy Spirit but there’s a lot of cool stuff about its/her origins that I remember enjoying about that reading.

Plus if ppl want to play the ‘But we were talking about God “the Father”’ card there’s places we can point to where God “the Father” isn’t referred to as God “the Father.” There’s been feminine imagery used to describe Them, among other types, so it’s really inaccurate (some even argue idolatrous; a tale for another time) to call Them God “the Father” at all.

i was thinking about this too bc it’s trinity sunday and i was thinking about how god’s genderqueer like agender or bigender or whatever like what’s with transphobia anyway i just don’t get the extremely strong negative stance

Oh that’s RIGHt it is (THAT’S why there was so much trinity talk can you tell I haven’t been to church in a while.)

And yeah, it’s been on the mind lately because of some issues my GSA has been having with our university on the word queer and the whole rationale is ‘blah blah blah something about not acknowledging anything outside of the gender binary. Like. Your Deity is literally outside the gender binary. There are SO MANY theological discussions talking about the gendering of God (I prefer the Holy One so I’m gonna keep going with that) and the language we use to refer to Them and how you’re NOT SUPPOSED TO BE GENDERING THEM ONE WAY OR ANOTHER (aka all this stubborn masculinization of the Holy One)  because the POINT of the Holy One is Their Incomprehensible Mystery. 

My theology prof was even talking about how there’s this whole thing about how “If you think you understand God, it’s not God you’ve understood” and how that relates to these masculine images of God like. Ugh. I’m gonna write so much more on this later but I need to dig up all my sources again and I want to have a better idea of where I’m going that just frustrated rambling.
