Awesome Practice Break Ideas
We all need breaks sometimes in order to renew our focus and stay productive. Here are some ideas for short and fun practice breaks!
• Step outside for a moment, especially if it’s nice out! I don’t know about you, but I always feel like a vampire exiting the music building after being inside practicing and attending classes and rehearsals all day. Also sunshine and fresh air are good for you!
• If it’s not nice out, take a short walk around the hallway/music building. It’ll get your mind off practice for a few minutes and you might actually run into another musical human being you can talk to.
• Eat a small, healthy snack and drink some water. Music is a sport just as much as athletics and as athletes we need hydration and sustenance too.
• Call your mom/grandma/close friend if you need a longer practice break. They will be thrilled to hear from you and you’ll get to talk to someone who loves you and who cares.
• Find a fellow music student friend person you can rant to about a) your teacher, b) your repertoire, c) your theory/music history/counterpoint/composition class, d) composers, etc. I always feel much better after a mutual rant with a friend over some music subject.
• In a last-ditch effort to get your mind off practice, check your social media. SET A TIMER OR SOMETHING otherwise four and a half hours later you’ll be watching cat fail videos on YouTube with no idea how you got there and no practice done. I speak from experience.
Hope this helps! Always take a break when you’re stuck on something or feeling frustrated. Sometimes even just taking your mind off a problem and focusing on something else for a bit makes it easier to come back to, plus your mind is refreshed.
