A problem child
Hooray, I finally finished another drawing. I decided to dedicate this time to the most controversial boy in Doey. I think I'll do something similar for the rest of the guys later. :Ń

I should be working.
But I don't think Kevin ever received a "Selection" ceremony.
So, remember in Chapter 3 there was the tape called "Samuel Lee's Last Day", Ms. Brooks stated:
"Well of course, they'd never miss this!"
The audio revealed to us that the children of Playcare would circle around a counselor and/or scientist as they wait to hear which child who would be chosen for what the kids thought at first would be adoption (and it's a half truth too since Playtime likes to send kids out to their new families to keep their sinister plans under wraps.) But in reality, the selected child would be turned into a toy/be put in the bigger body.
It's portrayed as like this mini big event, something the kids should praise the selected child for, to shower them in cheers and joy, and a good farewell before the child is whisked away to either adoption, or horrific reanimation paired with the worst kind of dehumanizing abuse.
But in the same chapter with the tape "1322 Report: Void", the scientist states in his log that they:
"...we've pulled him from the Home Sweet Home just before lights out to perform-"
And of course, Joseph interrupts the log and asks where Kevin went. But the way they answered his question felt... off to me.
Joseph: "IsĀ Kevin sick? Why did you take him away?" Scientist: "I-I... Yes... Kevin is very sick. Very, very sick. But we want to make him better. But he can only get better if we take him to where we can provide proper care, and give him proper rest."
To me, it felt like Kevin was rushed out before lights out, and while I know these sorts of ceremonies are short, it still felt unusually quick. On top of it, when one of Kevin's few friends Joseph asked where they took Kevin, they lie to him.
Shouldn't selected kids get this big hurrah? Why is it much quieter for Kevin so suddenly? And why lie about his condition?
The answer is plain and simple. The scientists and counselor's view Kevin as someone lesser despite excelling in both grades and the tests.
Because Kevin is a neurodivergent child with behavioral issues that went untreated, and they did nothing to help him regulate and understand his feelings and emotions better, and given this is the 90's, they label him as a problem child and a trouble maker.
So they assume because Kevin has a hard time getting along with others with how aggressive he can be, and what few friends Kevin has, they assume this selection ceremony is not worth the time, and they just rush him out just so they can throw him into the clay soup with two other kids and be done with it.
Why bother if they assume no one is going to miss him? Who would miss the problem child?
If i'm missing smthing, lemme know!
Thinking about Kevin's friend Joseph. A friend who, based on what we hear from the clip, cared very deeply about him. Who worried for him. Who went out of his way to figure out what was happening that last night. Who would only say his temporary farewell when he'd been promised Kevin would be okay.
A friend who never saw Kevin again after that night. Who Kevin probably never saw again, and who he didn't even realize tried, unwittingly but still, to protect Kevin from becoming part of Doey. Friends who never got to say goodbye. Friends who probably died never knowing the other's fate.
Kevin's ally, someone who genuinely cared about Kevin. Who was taken from him.
Joseph, Kevin's friend. And Kevin, Joseph's friend
You all know Kevinās old friend, Joseph? Wellā¦heās been turned into a toy in this AU!
10 years before The Decade Of Joy being made, the adults isolated him from most of the other toys besides a fewā¦now that heās out, he works as an engineer. He was thrilled to see Kevin again! but somethingās different about him. Almost as if itās not just Kevin anymore.
Due to being a toy thatās constantly freezing combined with the fact that Doey isnāt JUST Kevin anymore, itās caused some tension between the two former friends. Maybe even some distrust.

Reblogs appreciated
Out of Context Question but What If for my Project Phoenix AU, I make the Simon Smoke Critter trapped by the Doctor Kevinās friend Joseph?
Yes, do it! The angst and feels! Kevin would appreciate being reunited
No. It doesnāt make sense. Make it a random kid.

FROM MEMORY:
"I remember that time when I see children with their toys, I always wish that I had my own.. but then Kevin decided to uhm.. steal toys and then offered them to me. It was so many of them, I was surprised to be honest. Well, he did get a lecture of stealing is bad after it but its ok. He could've get one from the toy box but I dont think he will do it. Im happy he's my friend"
I'm basing my idea of Kevin's age entirely off of Joseph. We never hear Kevin's human voice (and I sincerely doubt Doey's voice belonged to any of them in their human forms,) but we do hear Joseph's, and Joseph sounds and acts very young. Not as young as Jack, but definitely no older than ten or eleven and that's generous (from what I can hear. I can't confirm the age of his VA.) I'd assume Kevin and Joseph would be at similar ages, since children's closest friends tend to be around their age, so Kevin was probably twelve at the oldest.
Lashing out in the moment like he did after the destruction of Safe Haven was an understandable response to the how unbelievably and unfathomably horrific that situation was for the three of them. It would be for anyone at any age, but for a child? And one with what sounds like both behavioural issues and some kind of mental disability? Literally how else was he supposed to react?
DOEY AND FROSTY SIDE STORY
Title: Frigid Friendship?
First half: Many years before The Decade Of Joy.
Second half: Set during part 8 of the canon story.

The two boys walked to the middle of Playcare as they spoke to each other, both seeming very invested in their conversation. They were almost completely distracted before Joseph suddenly stopped and pointed where he wanted to. Right next to the statue, he walked up to it and then turned back to his friend, š»Kevinš».
Joseph: āokayā¦so weāre gonna play Yeti Tag, right?ā
āYeti Tagā was the two boyās modified version of Freeze Tag. Joseph always had cold hands for some reason and the first time the two had become friends, they chose to okay Freeze Tag. After a few months of playing the game, they added more and more modifications and eventually it just became Yeti Tag. š»Kevinš» nodded, putting his arms together. It always felt weird to have them just hanging down so heād always hold them up in some way or another. He listened closely as Joseph spoke.
Joseph: āOkay, Iāll be the Freezer, youāll be the runner! Remember, we canāt touch the ground after the countdown is up, you canāt cheat and you canāt let me touch you! Alright?ā
š»Kevinš»: āSounds good.ā
Joseph: āGreat!ā
Before he could turn to start counting he frowned then turned back to š»Kevinš», a more anxious or nervous look was on his face as he looked cautiously as his best friend. He knew that š»Kevinš» could get a bitā¦violentā¦if he felt scared or angry from intense play or other things. He didnāt know what happened to š»Kevinš» before he was brought to Playcare but he DOES know that it really messed him up. Itās okay though! Heās still his best friend!
Joseph: āoh- and remember, this is just for pretend.ā
š»Kevinš»: āAlright. I remember.ā
Joseph smiled then turned around to the wall the began counting. š»Kevinš» looked around for some place he could go that wasnāt touching the ground before eventually deciding on one of the many trees in Playcare. He climbed up and sat comfortably, knowing his friend wouldnāt be able to climb up to reach him. When he finished counting, Joseph turned around and looked around for š»Kevinš» before noticing him on the tree. He blinked in surprise before running over to him and crossing his arms in a joking manner.
Joseph: āheyy, I canāt climb trees! Thatās cheating!
š»Kevinš»: āHey, I didnāt hear a rule that I couldnāt climb the trees!ā
Joseph: āFineeeeā¦now come down so I can tag you!ā
Kevin rose a brow then smirked defiantly.
š»Kevinš»: ānope. Not gonna!ā
Joseph: āWhat? Why not?ā
š»Kevinš»: ādonāt want your icy hands on me.ā
Joseph: āFineeeā¦.hey, why donāt we play at Home Sweet Home instead?ā
š»Kevinš»: āHmmmā¦Sure. Letās go!ā
š»Kevinš» climbed down and started to run over to Home Sweet Home with Joseph following after him. When they made it, Joseph struggled to open the door but with a bit of help from š»Kevinš», he was able to get it open.

Frosty watched silently as Doey walked out of the Meeting Room with the other 3 leaders and their Second-In-Commands. Dogday walked out and gave Doey a farewell before immediately making his way to the nearby elevator and taking it back up to the main floor of the building. Doey sighed and grabbed a folder and began to check some stuff inside of it but was stopped by Frosty.
Frosty: āHey! Ke- Doey. How uhā¦how are you?ā
Doey stared at him with a blank expression before blinking a couple of times and slowly putting the folder up, turning to him.
Doey: āš§Mmm..Could be better ⦠Do you need something?š§ā
Frosty: āAh, Nope! Just wanted to see how my bud was doing! Your meeting go well?ā
Doey: āš§ā¦It went fine. Thatās all I can really tell youā¦Why?š§ā
Frosty: āNothing, Nothing! Justā¦can I speak to you?ā¦in private?ā
Doeyās brow slowly furrowed and he began to narrow his eyes before he sighed and nodded, allowing Frosty back into the Meeting Room. Once inside, Frosty sighed and hesitantly sat down as Doey sat across from him with a serious look on his face. He changedā¦so much. Much more mature than before, heāll say thatā¦What did those scientists do to him..?
Frosty: āI justā¦needed to say, i kinda missed hanging out with you! I meanā¦we were friends back at Playcare and now itās like we donāt even know each other..I was really sad when you left, you knowā¦andā¦and youāve changed. A lot! I was hoping we couldā¦catch up? Remember how we used to play together?ā
Doey was quiet. He slowly put his hands together then spoke up.
Doey: āš§I remember.š§ -š»I donāt remember much..but I can make out some memory.š» - š§But, I have a job. So i canāt exactly hang out as much with you as Iādā¦.like.š§ā
Frosty: āYou..donāt remember muchā¦?ā
Doey: āš§Itāsā¦itās complicated. I remember a lot.š§ -š»Sometimes too much.š»ā
Frosty: āBut you remember meā¦right?ā
Doey: āš”ā¦. Right.š”ā
Frosty fell silent, staring at Doey before eventually shaking his head and putting a hand to the side of his head.
Frosty: āwellā¦as you can tellā¦I remember you! I remember a lot about you! How we used to play, talk, everything! Itās just thatā¦youāve changedā¦a lot. You used to be š»protective, short-tempered, snappyā¦but really niceš»! A-and you still are! But youāre just soā¦š§Mature and Properā¦?š§ š”But youāre sometimes Goofy andā¦Childishš”ā¦and itās a bit..oddā¦for me. But thatās okay! Because youāre my best friend! Right, š»Kevinš»?ā
Frosty held out his fist for a fist bump butā¦there was no response from Doey. Doey WANTED toā¦but it was too cold. He looked down at where Frosty was sitting. Was thatā¦ice..? Doey shivered as the room grew colder. Cold. Too coldā¦it almost hurt. After a few seconds of staring at his hand, Doey stood up and quickly walked over to the door.
Doey: āRightā¦friends. Alsoā¦itās Doey.ā
Frosty sat there in silence as Doey walked out of the room, his fist slowly lowering to the table.
